Was thinking like early this year prior to the season starting who i thought would take the next step or make some sort of impact, i said Moore and White and was happy that both had a good year...
Well in 2009, who do you think will take the next step or make an impact....Im not talking about the regulars this includes Cotchin who is going to be a star, more so players who are on the fringe, have been injured (ie: Cogs) or just drafted in the last 2 years... Ill include adam thompson in this too, some might think he will make an immediate impact, im hoping he will too....
You could do your top 3 purely on players drafted in the last 2 years as opposed to what i have done on fringe players, having JR, edwards, connors, rance, morton, putt, collins etc.
Im sure everyone has their own thoughts on who they think/believe will take that all important next step, so here are my 3 players who i think will make an impact in 09’...My 3 are more based on fringe type of players....
1) Dean Polo - hard at it and can win his own ball, also can kick on both sides of his feet unlike some others, plays a short kicking type of game similar to lewis of the hawks) his come back game after injury against port over there was ok and backed it up in the 100G at the G game V the blues with 23 disposals, i had him in our top 5 best on the ground....Still dont know why he doesn’t get a fair go compared to others, played 6 games in 08’ and ave about 16 possies a game, something i feel he can build on if given more of a chance....
2) Cleve Hughes - im quietly confident that clever can take the next step, think he will surprise a few like moore did this year, we know what he can do as seen against Port (6 goals) and the 2nd Q v the blues where he kicked 3, but admittingly he has to be more consistent....As a key tall and another pre-season under his belt should be primed for 09’ in his 4th year of league football, i see him more as the traditional forward who leads out well and the bonus he actually kicks straight...
3) JON - This might surprise some that i have him in my 3 as to take the next step but as its about fringe players etc i thought JON can take that step....
As the cliché’ goes its now or never for jarred, i think we all know he’s hard it and can run down players, is a decent mark over head and very quick....he skills aren’t as bad as some make out to be but his decision making especially in 07 was atrocious, this 2008 season i must say his decision making improved dramatically to what i saw in 07’...I think that melb game this year when he had 11 possies and 6 marks i thought something there to work with, now that shouldn’t be said about a pic 8, that’s more reserved for a 3rd or 4th rounder... given that i saw him in the magoos plenty of times in 08’, have noticed that he is kicking short more and not trying to over do things, basically has simplified his style of play, i think they need to play him wing or forward....
So 10+ games in 09 is not out of the question, if he can’t manage that we will surely be saying sayonara to jarred!
Footnote: Would have to say that patto has to make his mark in 09', yes has been a regular but i think that has been more due to not having a genuine back up for simmo, im still not sure what his best possie is, not a bona fide ruckman nor a bona fide fwd....ahh i think ill leave patto to others to comment on for their top 3...
Btw, for the young guns id say Rance will play 8 to 12 games in 09’,
