PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

My vote goes to Tyson Edwards- one of my all time favourites.

He can play back, midfield or forward.

He can play tight or attacking- This is the area that most of the hair-do's struggle with.

He is skilled both sides of the body and can work in heavy traffic or out wide. His agility and awareness inside are as good as anyone's. He is always moving at the stoppages and can create space for quality clearances with acceleration, awareness and quick decisive hands and feet.

Because he can use both sides of his body and has high awareness he has an array of options even when he's hemmed in.

A genuine small in stature at 180 and 81, he is remarkably strong and can force a smart disposal even when gang tackled.

He has genuine ball winning ability when he can run on to the ball, one on one or in a pack. He knows when to defend and when to attack.

Brave and determined, he has a high leap and superb hands when in the air. He can take a grab in a contest against much bigger players. He will throw himself at altitude at a spoil with great effect.

An indigenous player, he has concentration and discipline. The perfect foil to the chestnuts about aboriginal players going "walkabout".

He is resilient (200 odd games), plays injured and seldom shows it and has an inpeccable football character. He's the guy I try to put up to young players as a role model on the park.

This bloke has climbed the ranks starting as a small defender, working through a HFF and then into minor on-ball roles before cementing a place in a topline midfield. He keeps improving. There is no assignment too tough for him. I have always thought that a good player who runs both ways is better than a champion that runs one. Call it a prejudice.

Tyson Edwards may not be the best footballer in the land but he's massively underrated and a complete player.

Maybe one of our youngsters will take his chances and emulate him.
