The Alternate Strip debate

Esserden's clash strip made it really clear who was who on Saturday. The length of their jumpers was uniform so that the white shorts were always visible.

I was in the Ponsford so it wouldn't have made a massive difference anyway. But from the Southern stand with the players backlit by the sun it must have been a big help.

As for the AFL forcing North to wear their away strip in a home game - typical of the meagre ogre and his *smile* imp.

Did anyone else have a bit of trouble distinguishing the strips in the Weagles/Richmond game?

Dark blue/yellow vs black/yellow was one of the worst clashes I have seen this year & I certainly found it confusing for a short while until it became one way traffic.

Yep they were hard to tell apart on telly.

Definitely agree, I was second guessing more than once in that game. WCE should have been wearing their standard strip.

Were the dynamic duo redecorating the bat cave that day?

May have if I actually got to see it..... ;D

Collingwood are precious as usual. When he came on to 774 (or was it 1116) and sprouted his rubbish, I couldn't believe the arrogance. As far as I'm concerned, if the AFL deems that a second strip is required then all teams should abide if they want to remain in the AFL. The home team should get precedence and the away team where necessary should wear the 2nd strip. Aparently it might happen 2 or 3 times a season. What is the big deal?

Sadly the young fella is right. If you don't play in the AFL "approved" jumper of the day, you are now liable for a fine of $5000 per person (figure is off memory, but its definitely per person).

There were a few let offs with teams (WCE and Adelaide I think) bring over the wrong jumpers by mistake, but the AFL reserve the right to drop this bomb on a club.

Well, I've had a great few days. Tigers winning, the othe 3 of the 'big 4' losing, AND being called 'the young fella' by someone younger than me ;D Thanks for that T74 :)

Collingwood did a deal with the Roos which meant that the Roos would get plenty of cash & all they had to do was wear their alternative jumpers.James Brayshaw confirmed a deal had been done & was very happy with it.So on on this occaision its a win win situation.

Are you sure about this mb? If that's the case, then why were the roo's supposedly fuming about being 'forced' to wear the alternate strip for this game? I thought the afl told them to wear it because the pies alternate strip clashed more than their home strip?

the roos agreed to wear their away strip in return for getting the home game status and therefore the cash from the gate. its been well documented.

That's the insane part about it.

We seriously don't clash with the Bombers and they force us to wear that god awful away jersey.

Yet when we do clash they seemingly don't care ???

Actually its messier than that (if what I have heard previously on the radio is accurate).

Pies and Roos were talking about a deal where in return for shared corporate arrangements at Kangas/Pies games, the Roos would wear the away strip.

The Pies being the Pies, they did SFA about it, and with no info on corporate interest, the Roos assumed the deal was null and void and got on with their lives.

Then the game came up. The AFL said they had to wear the away strip, so they were a little annoyed. The Pies were annoyed because they thought a deal had been done, and anyway the Kangas always change their jumper so why should they care.

In the end, despite all the bluster the Kangas waved the white flag saying "we are wearing it because we are forced to", but did the deal with the Pies anyway.

A side topic on this debate. To me, an alternative strip would mean that 2 strips clash. Can someone explain to me then, why an alternative strip usually contains more of the same colours of the traditional strip? A clash strip would be something completely different. Not saying that teams need to have a clash strip, but seems idiotic to me to just come up with more of the same (hello eddie). Melbourne's on the weekend was completely different, as was carltons all white. They negated what might have been a clash of colours.

I agree that if the AFL want to get fair dinkum about this, that any clash strip should be 80% white, except in the cases of Sydney and maybe Geelong.
Design (& merchandising) should be a secondary concern.

The ONLY side that doesnt need an away strip is US.... THE TIGERS ;D the rest can get stuffed plus the Tigers alternate effort is garbage

Agreed, it should be like most soccer leagues around the world
For example the home jumper for Man U is red, but their away strip this season is White w/ Blue
Chelsea is blue but their away strip is black
Real Madrid is white but their away strip is blue
They all tend to change it each season too as they know people will buy the most up to date jumper

Only difference is that AFL shouldn't have fixed home and away jumpers, only wear the away jumper when there is a clash

The thing is ToO that the design & MERCHANDISING are the primary concern. There is no reason for an alternate strip when the entire problem can be solved by one team wearing white shorts and the other wearing black.

Soccer teams have 3 strips and know the marketing power. They wear traditional strips at home, the second strip away if necessary and the third strip is a fun strip and used for some games.

For some reason we like to blind and confuse fans with one strip. If the most recognised, respected and favoured brands can do it then why cant we?
