I'd rate Ablett without peer.He could do things other footballers would only dream.

Agree evo. Freak.

But he never won his team a premiership!
Great footballer up there with the best - but I reckon the attributes of the greatest footballer in the last 20 years are -

* one who is a team player and brings his teamates into the game
* a leader who has led his team to a premiership and
* has won a brownlow.

Voss, Hird, Ricciutto closely followed by Judd, Williams

With out doubt Ablett. He has no peer when he was at his best. He took a while to hits his straps, but when he did.....boy......

There is hope for some of our guns yet. ;D

Well , rather appropriate Poll for someone like me , who left Australia 19 years ago , and have struggled to be able to see/hear all the info on the Footy to probably make an informed opinion on this subject, but what the hell.

Playing myself on most Saturday's mean't little time to get to watch games in the flesh , but on the odd occasion when a bye or something came along , I took the opportunity to go along and watch Ablett play.
The Guy was an absolute freak on the field , never seen an individual player have such an impact on a game as he did. General skills in all facets of the Game were unparalleled , then throw in the tenacity level for a Forward and it was almost unfair.

Seen Carey , Greg Williams , Dermy and a few other's play before leaving and they were all terrific talent's , but none had that "IT" factor that I associate with Ablett............just had that intangibile that comes along once in a lifetime IMO.

Careful Remote.
Matty Richardson's played in one finals series and never won a best & fairest for his club.
Does that make him any less of a champion player for the RFC?

Last time I looked football was a team based sport. Premierships weren't won by individual players and Brownlow medals were decided by white maggots.

Ability wise Ablett is the best individual footballer I've seen easily.

Yabletttttt.

I saw all of these games except the 1986 one where he kicked 5.2 and won the game on his own in the last 15 minutes after hardly touching it all day. Bear in mind that he was only stationed at full forward in his last three years 1994-96. He was simply a freak.

i can`t remember ablett being a great defender,in fact that was probably the only flaw in his game.
he`s the worst defender out of all the players named so far, apart from maybe lockett .

Mopsy.
Ablett didn't play much defence and he didn't chase too hard as a forward BUT I saw him playing HBF one game and he destroyed the opposition forwards.

Thanks for cheering up an other wise dull day!

Even though I'm a president of his direct relative Michael Tuck for mine. Gutsy, team player and though he never won a brownlow was a out and out champion. Ontop of that, rarely got injuries and could play in wet or dry weather.

Too often it comes down to people that kicks goals who get the recognition and not enough emphasis is put on who does the 1%ers and does the team thing in football. I found it bloody amusing yesterday when Tuck really stuck his neck out and put the body on the line in a 50/50 situation, the ball eventually got to Lids who kicked the goal but i think it was only one person, other than me that mentioned that gutsy effort which got Lids that goal.

In order these are the players I went out of my way to go and watch when Richmond wasn't playing, Ablett, Lockett, Voss, Judd and I would put them in that order as the best in the last 20 years.

I am cautious on Judd as he hasn't done it for 10 years yet, but he is unique in his ability to run away from contests with the ball.
Voss the best onfield leader I have watched with the most acute sense of when a special effort was required since Royce Hart.
Lockett, without peer as a full forward IMHO, at his peak I just don't know how anyone would plan to stop him.
Ablett, did things that weren't possible, was a combination of the abilities of the other three.

So who would be first picked in my backyard, Brereton. I marvelled at the others but Brereton was inspirational and put a shiver up your spine.

Ablett, '89 Granny, as Richie Benaud would say, maaaarvelous. The amount of times I saw Ablett destroy other teams with sheer brilliance. Geez wish he had played for us.

1 Carey
2 Hird
3 Lockett
4 Ablett

8 Buckley
9 Judd
10 Delidio

I just voted for Ablett in an easy decision. Second place and onward is where it gets difficult.

But I'd like to mention some players not touted as the best, but I think very worthy of mention on this list.

Harvey is the best at what he does (but not THE best player). He's ancient and can still do it. He is still amzing to watch.

Darran Jarman. Was a star at Hawthorn and the crows...you've got to be good to shine in premiership teams. Sublime skills.

Kevin Bartlett. How does a bloke that looks like a frail old man kick 7 goals in a grand final (not to mention the rest of that final series). Again, best at what he did. Living legend.

All round best players over a long period

Ablett, Voss, Carey, Lockett

Consistent, amazing big game performers:

Mcleod, in my opinion, the greatest individual hand in winning flags I've ever seen

Voss, never failed in a GF, should have a NS

Ablett,

Brereton

so all up, Voss for me.
