Are you sure we will even find that out?
I thought the club said that the candidates wouldn't be revealed. Could be wrong.

Well exactly. Puts into perspective just how silly Notevenonthetrack Days' premature and extravagant $6 bet really is.

Frustrating. Just looked at AFL site.

Laidley is being wooed by Port definitely and West Coast alledgedly already for a strategic/mentoring coaching director role.

Port's financial position and uncertainty with coach might make it tough for them, but these are the sort of appointments that really give clubs and edge.

We obviously have to get our Coach in place first but I can only hope Laidley has strong ties to one of our candidates and plays a waiting game. :hihi

Interesting to hear it, didn't waste anytime. Maybe his wife wants a sea-change.

The RFC wouldn't have the intelligence to even contemplate to consider the Junkyard Dog at Punt Road.

DD, what do you see as the point of this role i.e. recruiting, coaching, managing, development, liason?

Where would it fit into the structure/hierarchy of the footy department?

Just cause it hasn't been heavily publicised doesn't mean we are already on the case, besides I thought March had already mentioned that we might be having a word with him.

"I would be very surprised if our football sub-committee didn't speak to Leigh . . . to at least find out if was interested. There is a high calibre of senior coaches around and I would be surprised if we didn't talk to all of them, including the bloke who just left the Kangaroos."

Laidley is very highly respected by other coaches for his strategic nous and ability to prepare and plot against the opposition.

I see him ideal in a Director of Coaching/Opposition Analysis role.

I only ask because a lot of these types of roles that became fashionable in the EPL over the last couple of years proved disastrous. Clashes of egos, differences in gameplans/tactics, thoughts on club direction, etc, proved it to be an untenable role.

While they are very different beasts, the underlying issues would still arise I reckon. The coach has to be the be all and end all when it comes to these things (recruitment the obvious exception).

Hmm fair point, a interesting thought.

I'd still be inclined to disagree in our (Aussie Rules) instance though on two grounds...

A) Different cultural/fiscal repercussions/values
B) In many instances it is the AFL Head Coach pursuing these things...(Malthouse desperately wanted Eade, Williams is keen on Laidley etc etc)

I'm not a EPL expert or fan even, so I can't comment too much on the comparison, and I certainly see the sense in your post...but I think in nearly every instance such a move would not be made without the spark or approval of the Head Coach in aussie rules and it is such a small and insular industry compared to soccer/EPL that I think everyone has a better sense of who they can get along with and often they have history's/friendships with them.

Connelly was a classic example going back to Melboune, Daniher to West Coast and all have had glowing reports at their respective clubs. Different roles to what we are discussing, granted, but similar in terms of potential ego clashes.

At the end of the day the best organisations are about getting the best people. West Coast are the embodiment of this by chasing names such as Voss, Burns, Daniher, Colbert and now Laidely for various roles.

I actually would be happy for JYD to be in the interview mix for the senior job.

I would just say with the EPL comparison that EPL tactics are simpler than AFL because you only have 10 outfield players on each side and fairly limited flexibility in what you can do with them and only three subs. When you have less choices to make it all becomes about judgment about what changes to make, that requires one person to be in charge.

AFL is different, twice as many players and much more freedom in what to do with them, that means you need depth in the expertise making those decisions because no one person can possibly be across it all.
