I know that many younger Tiger supporters will be wondering why this is posted here but last night North Melbourne's Galloping Gasometer, Mick Nolan, passed away with cancer.
Many of us, recalling the Tigers in their heyday, will also remember Nolan with his team mate Barry Goodingham leading the Kangaroos' ruck in their first premiership win over-running the Hawkers in the 1975 Grand Final.
Nolan was a very big player. He was 6'3-4", 191-4cm, but weighed something like 120kgs. He wasn't fat, it seemed to be just a very big but strong frame that he carried. For Tiger fans, North knocked us off in the Prelim that year.
My memories of the Prelim were of us again being well down at half-time, again, then, again, Royce coming onto the ground, again, on one leg, in the third quarter to immediately begin the recovery. We got within a couple of points in the last quarter when Michael Green, in the goal square, took a big mark but played on and got swamped by David Dench and Frank Gumbleton. The ball dribbled through for a behind. North immediately rebounded with a goal, then another couple, and the game was over. We all went home thinking, no matter there'll be next year. Unfortunately that wasn't to be. With an aging list, many of the Tiger greats retired at the end of 1975 and in 1976. A couple of finals appearances in 1977, again beaten by North in a semi, then the wait till 1980.
North had a very good premiership team in 1975, off the top of my head, in positions where they played that day:
B: Henshaw, Dench, Gumbleton
HB: Rantall, Farrant, Blight
C: Feltham, Greig, Chisnall
HF: Schimmelbusch, Briedis, Kekovich
F: Crosswell, Wade, Cable
R: Nolan, Davis, Burns
Res: Goodingham, Cowton
Coach: Barassi
I know that the North 1975 premiership team were going to have a reunion up on the Gold Coast for Nolan where he had resided. I hope they had it in time.
