The Game of Gumpus

Watched the camel a few times way back when he first started.
Kid looked very awkward because he hadn't grown into his big long pelican body but he never did much wrong.
Contested hard in the ruck, ran to the right spots to provide an option, took his marks and made sure to use his time and find a target.
Now that he's had time to grow into his body and develop some genuine match time the camel is coming along in leaps and bounds.
He's still only played a handfull of senior games but he's rucking well, handball releases to the runners well, takes his marks and slots goals, AND the bit I'm liking most about his game is his willingness to make second efforts around the ruck contest. He's bustling, tackling and even crumbing the loose ball at times. Got a strong feeling we'll have a good'un by the end of this year and for many to come.

At least the Camel got up after a bit of a rub and had another crack at it.

Geez Lids and Willo thats a humungous call. Think I'll stay with my nice safe " we might have a good'un" call for now.

as i'm on the other side of the world at the moment hadn't had a chance to see a lot of our games this year. have caught up with most this week & i have to say i've been extremely impressed with gus's games against north, sydney & the lions. in all three of these games he's shown that he can be a genuine "quality" no. 1 ruck (apart from when he had his penguin waddle giong against the lions)

his tap outs, his second efforts, the area he covers all over the ground, even his marking & goal kicking has been quite impressive. Gus is still quite young for a ruckman and still has a bit of development/improvement left in him.

still with some work to do & a bit of time...but with browne, vickery & putt to come through, what was a clear weakness (our ruck stocks) suddenly looks quite healthy

go Gus!!

Nope, he cramped up in both hammy's including glute muscles. Had a chat to him and apparently he slipped on take off in the ruck contest which caused him to come down heavily on one leg which jarred his back. The result of that was the instand cramp. He said he couldn't move his legs at all and could feel his (_(_) getting tighter and tighter. He tried to roll over and couldn't even do that so he was left laying there watching the ball zoom around him until help came.

Apparently it featured significantly in the match review and much p_ss was taken out of poor Gus!

As to his game....

Besides his ruckwork which is servicable and his ground coverage and second efforts which are exceptional, the big bonus (and an important one in my eyes) is his work in the forward line. He didn't take a stack of marks, but when he';s down there he makes sure that if he doesn't mark it, then the opposition won't either. If the ball doesn't come to ground, it's a cardinal sin to your key forwards as far as i'm concerned.

Unfortunately, Simmonds sinned regularly and played one of the worst 4 goal performances i've seen for a while if that makes sense!

Importantly, if you were to look at Gus's graph right now, it's just continuing to improve! True it's early days, but it's the way he goes about his game. With his workrate and tackling, even when he's down he's going to be worth his spot just for the defensive side. The opposition can always try to stop you offensively, but it's another thing to stop a player's defensive capabilities.

I actually thought a sniper must have been in the stands as he looked like he'd been shot ;D

Agree this kids has come on in leaps and bounds since being given some responsibility and agree on his forward work. A couple of times now we have got goals as a result of him bringing the ball to ground, with good crumbers like Nahas and Collins lurking.

I was a bit worried about Gus after the young Ranga was promoted and he had a few too many fumbles early on this season, but wow has he come on with a bit of confidence. Hopefully this continues as he faces tougher opponents.

I love this kid, what a revelation. One of my favourites.

Go Gus !

You were worried?

I've still got the young ranga sitting as a reserve ruck in thr supercoach team after a last second decision to dump Angus! Ain't i kicking myself now!

Given the pasting he copped from the regular Coburg watchers my expectations were low, however I have been reasonably surprised.

Long way to go but here's hoping.
