Got a call from my brother yesterday said he went to a Grand Final breakfast (emergency services I think) and Mark Lee was one of the guest speaker’s.  He caught up with the The General and had a great chat with him.  Some the thing’s he mentioned-
-Bloody shocking that they could lose a bloke like Terry Smith, unbelievable bloke loved a beer, loved footy, The General used to live with Terry when he came down from Mildura.
-Terry and him used to have a beer most nights (even after training), said he wouldn’t survive playing today, too strict.
-Went to a Richmond premiership player’s reunion (all player’s who played a winning premiership) on Wednesday night said it was a bit of a flat night mainly because of Terry.
-No team would of beaten that Richmond team in 1980, went on to say Bartlett would take home and away games pretty casually, but when the final’s came around was full-on, said he was the best he had ever seen.
-Said his young bloke would not make it, every week-end he would either drive to Bendigo or Melbourne to watch him play.  A lot of bloody miles but you have to do it, it’s your kid.
-Chris Connelly walked pasted and The General called him over, he asked him who was Fremantle going to chose with there second pick in the 1999 draft (Hasleby was first pick) he said Fremantle would of went for Fiora, outstanding junior who just didn’t work hard.  Said Fremantle were very lucky. Don’t we know it.

Great post, Jake.

Phil Smart said the same after the draft. Went on record as a Fiora fan.

The most painful part of the Fiora selection was that it was entirely orthodox.

The most painful part of the Fiora debacle was that RFC traded up to get him. From memory, RFC traded pick 8 and McKee for pick 3 and Clinton King. The picks were then used on Fiora and Stephen Roach ( no games) , making it one of the biggest non-deals ever.

Thing is, in isolation you'd cop it. It happens to the best recruiters. But the fact it was a pattern meant we stayed poor to mediocre and Richo-centric far too long
