Wow this has generated some mometum.
I appreciate all your thoughts on both counts. For and against.
Now for my thoughts a little bit further, which i have stated and go against many here, especially you Claw. So here it is again !.
Every game a footballer steps out to play for the Richmond Football Club, his main priority should be to play at his outmost best. I fail to believe any player deliberately doesnt give his all to win.
A selection committee may have another agenda.
A coach is hard to tell. Without naming any , i would have to say some coaches and clubs would have to be questioned as to how fair dinkum they were in winning. One game springs to mind straight away, which was a farce for the AFL. How they can believe "tanking" in one form or another doesnt occur is beyond me.
I didnt play the game at the highest level, but when i did play football i played for a club whose ability to win games was zero. One particular season we won two games that we were not expected to win at all considering our average loosing margin was over 100+ point EVERY game. I played in the ruck and was our taller player at the club and that says something when you are only 6" foot playing against taller kids and bigger bodies. I never went out . on ANY occasion and never game my all for the club. No matter what was the circumstance or no matter who we played. We won two games that year and i will tell you , unless you have gone through it yourself then you have no idea how great it felt. The smiles on our faces , the sheer joy was unbelievable.
When i was a little older and got into martial arts, i had been training for a couple of years and had my first amateur muay thai/kickboxing fight and i was fighting against an experienced guy. I wasnt given a chance to last one round. I knocked him out the first round (to the canvas) he got up(to his creit and courage) and the fight lasted another 2 rounds. So i lasted 3 rounds of a fight i wasnt given a chance to last 1.
So , the reason i am saying all this is , there is nothing better than winning. Winning builds the right culture, winning builds success and success ultimately gives you a chance at finals. Then its anyone's chance at a premiership. Our culture is something that many inside and outside have itentified as truly lacking at our club for so long it aint funny anymore. Its a joke.
We have some promising kids. Lids, Cotch and Tambling to name a few(just going on top 10 pics ) who, if our culture isnt fixed and winning isnt a priority then we may see these kids and other promising kids of ours playing for other clubs because THEY WANT SUCCESS SO BAD.
Thats why with Cousins there this year and i hope he is retained next year ( on pure form ) as he is one player that can lead by example and show the younger players how hard you have to train and work to succeed, to have success.
Lastly , and i will leave it at this. How many first round draft picks(number 1 or 2) have won premierships for their clubs since the inception of this draft in its present form? Since i think its introduction in what 1986 ? there have been what 2/3 ?
High draft picks dont guarantee you diddly. I firmly believe its how to nurture and develop your picks, who is the coach and who are his assistants that brings out the best in these kids and just maybe you unearth champions of the future.
History through 1986 is littered with picks taken later in the draft who have become absolute champions for their clubs.
People have short memories.
Winning isnt everything, its THE ONLY THING." Ben Cousins
Now i wait to be shot down. Fire away, but you will always miss to hit me because i believe in the above.
