PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Heard that Collingwood are going to raid Ireland and load up their stand alone VFL side with irish rookies. Gee, you'd worship Eddie if you were a Collingwood supporter.

How is it that someone like Martin Clarke comes over and picks up a football for the first time a year ago and already has better kicking skills than majority of the players in the league? Kennelly also. Clarkes disposal under pressure was unbelievable last week. He was probably Collingwoods most composed and best when the heat was on. This in a way confirms my belief that delivery efficiency has more to do with composure and how you handle pressure than with the technique itself. Anyone can hit a target under no pressure, but the good players can do so under pressure. Those little nippy Irish guys are good at getting out of tight situations and making time and space for themselves.

That is why you should ignore highlight reels and draft camp results when you draft kids, but focus on their ability to think in tight, compose themselves and deliver. In-tight footy is what it's all about and if a player can't win his own ball and think of a way out of a tight situation then you shouldn't even consider him.

So what are we doing on the Irish front? Have we even entertained the idea of getting a couple of them? Watching the Hybrid games you can just see that most of the Irish guys have better in tight thinking and evading ability than most of our senior listed blokes. Considering they are all non-professionals, surely we can lure one or two with contracts we currently have some of our non-performers on. The money would be much more than what they'd be earning and too good to refuse.
