We have all heard it before. Miller the Messiah, Sheedy, all the names have been bounced around.
It is amazing to reflect on how far this club has come in just a short time (relatively) A real air of excitement abounds the place and people are talking about the kids and the steps they have taken.
Hell even Sheedy and McGuire have resorted to taking snide swipes at us.
Hell even one of DVC can't even break into the side. (is that Gas's correct title?)
For so long we have been so ordinary and I think that that forced many of us battle weary supporters to look for the messiah.
Debate raged on here about Miller, Wallace, and just about anyone else that held a position of influence in the club hoping to find an anwer or infact convince themselves that the Messiah had arrived to lead us to the promised land.
What the recent event have really proved that there really is no messiah. It is an object of Greek mythology. No one person is going to lead this club to the PROMISED land. To put it simply there is no I in Team. Its not Miller, Wallace, Collins, or anyone of the others that will show us the light.
It is a combination of all that have been put into positions of influence with in the club that take us to the forgotten land. We are now starting to see each area of the club from recruiting to coaching to off field management starting to compliment each other in a real and meaningful way. We see Andy Collins lifting Coburg and the kids to new levels. We see a side like Coburg that many wrote of this year shaking the daylights out of the VFL.
We see kids that many doubted this time 12 months ago entrenching themselves at the elite level, Raines, Polo, Foley, and others showing that they now understand what it takes to make the grade and showing the have no intentions of surrendering their spots without a fight.
The perenial whipping boys in Pettifer and Tivendale showing what someone else saw in them that many of us couldn't. We are now seeing why Pettifer was so highly regarded as a Junior. His progress over the last year and a half has been astounding. I for one didn't rate Petts to highly in the past but will gladly admit that I was sadly mistaken. Keep it up son. You took awhile to arrive, but you are repaying the faith that Walllace showed in you.
Tucky.............well the most astounding thing about that article in the paper was the fact that he still has only played about 30 games of senior AFL football. I know I tend to forget that this is a guy who couldn't get a came two seasons ago under Danny Frawley. Man how far has this guy come. And all because Wallace readily admits he didn't know much about him, but was prepared to give him ago because he played with his old man and he was younger than Tim Flemming.
I don't think I need say anything about Polo, he says it all himself.
Why have we come so far so quickly. In my view it is because we now have an administration, a coaching staff a recruiting department and a team that have a clear vision and understand of what it takes, how to get there, and they are all prepared to work together to make that happen.
Andy Collins has been a revelation at Coburg and Wallace must be credited with getting him on board. Collins obviouly has a great eye for talent as he keeps finding kids that no one else wanted. He can obviously coach and he is obviously has implemented a game plan that is synonymous with the direction that Wallace wants to take us. When you read the media talking about how Coburg are playing like the Western Bulldogs you know the vision is obvious.
The simple answer is no one person was going to move us to the promised land alone. Those who have bagged Miller must now admit that he has orchestrated some great moves in assembling the coaching staff that he been bought to this club. I am not saying he is the messiah, as I don't believe their is one, but a great person can only do as well as the people around him allow him to do. He has dropped out of the limelight considerable in recent times, because he knows he can. He has a very shrewd media operator now handling the public face of the Richmond football club who he knows can talk the talk. I bet he loves not having to cringe everytime he sees the Coach of the Richmond football club making statements to the media on national TV.
Wallace, well he is the consumate professional, but football and media wise. He has surrounded himself with people he knows and trust, knowing they can deliver on what he wants. He has a clear vision of the game plan he wants the tigers to play, but he has shown he is no one trick pony. He knows the type of players he wants and needs to implement the game plan and has gone after those players. Dean Polo being a point of fact.
Whilst we still have a long way to go, this club has made massive progress in recent times which has been underpinned by a group of kids who have said here I am I want to be a part of this. Now I am here you aint going to get rid of me early.
Tigers of Old I warned you about Meyer, but you wouldn't believe. ;D
Enough said, except for one last word (or two)
