Had this post before not long ago but I'd go for Raines attacks the ball by next season body would have developed more & was born into the club has Tiger blood!!! Even though they got smashed on the weekend by bigger bodies Corey Bartel & Ling, Raines, Deledio, Foley & Polo(Didn't play) are our future number one midfield!!!

richo as captain

I think richo would have made a better captain than johnson. I know people will say that richos onfields duldrem tantrums at times would be the reason but i rekon being the captain would have changed his mind set , in all honesty hes yellow and black through and through and this is the type of captain we needed a leader.

Captain: RICHO

Vice Captain: Foley

I love that story that Tommy Roach told about how in one of his first games, Richo had a brain fade (played on after a mark 10m in front of goal) and got benched. Here was one of his childhood footy idols sitting next to him on the pine. Out of the blue Richo turns to Tommy and says "I don't know why I do it...I just do it"

Having said that, I haven't seen bad body language from Richo for ages and beleive it would be fitting for him to see his career out as captain (although it would be weird to see him in the no. 17)

Lids - would need to dominate in the midfield for a few games before being considered

Foley - a real goer and doesn't give up. Doesn't like to lose. Has all the credentials but for some reason can't see him as captain.

Simmo - Probably the early favourite but I just have lingering doubts as to his captaincy potential. How bad is that ankle? Will he be a captain that it always injured?

Richo - has matured a lot over the past few years but, unfortunately for everyone, the captaincy boat floated past when Campbell exited.

Coughlan - bad timing.

Newman - has all the attributes but there are still some ? about his ability to hold down defensive positions. Is a good offensive player but doesn't get enough of the ball when in the midfield.

Bowden - is lacking intensity and is making silly errors again, ala early 2000s.

Polak - now there's an interesting one. Has the skills, has the determination/mongrel. Does he have the maturity? So far you would say yes, but surely he'd need to prove it over a couple of seasons before becoming a captain.

Riewoldt - have only seen him play at U18 level and some VFL last year. Plays like a leader and acts like a leader but would need a couple of years.

So, we have a situation where we have a bunch of players that could have been captain but is probably too late now. We have a bunch of guys that could be captain if they continue on as they have been for a few more years. But nobody in the middle that is ready and willing to step up to the mark.

A very difficult situation. We really need to attract a captain to the club over the off season, but how does that go down from an existing player perspective. I think if it's a Judd type, you have no choice. If it's a Cameron Bruce type, makes it hard.

Simmo for mine. Has a great physical presence and lifts the team when he's in it, haven't heard too much from the man himself though. That said, it would be great to have a homegrown captain that has played with the Tiges since day dot. I fancy waiting to see how the current batch of kids kick on - I see Delidio and Raines being futurecandidates, but I'd want to see them hit 24-25 before they took on the job. Foley gets a stack of the ball but not sure if that means he should be Captain. I don't mind the Newman angle either, if he has a few good injury free years in the backline

Johnno stays as captain. We need stability right now, he's the reiging B & F and from what we hear from within the club, he displays the right leadership & mature credentials. Much as I reckon Richo lives & breathes the Tiges, is not the future. Foley & Lids need to impact more games before we given them more pressure. Newman is a workhorse at best, Simmo has had one good year. Hardly knocking the door down for the job.
If Cogs can get a good 2008 under his belt, he should be considered after that.

After 6 games it is clear that Johnson isn't in our best 22 anymore so why anyone thinks he should be captain in 08 beats me.

My first choice would be Richo but I think we need to look ahead and as 08 will perhaps be his last I would only select him if there was another young player who stood out as our next skipper. Unfortunately I can't see that player.

In the circumstances and without any real understanding of what they are like around the club, I would be looking for someone who might perform consistently and provide some physical leadership.

Simmo's ankle injuries are a worry.
Cogs knees are also a worry.
Foley maybe, but as solid as he is I wonder if we will ever see him tear a game apart.
Newman not good enough.
Polak anyone?

Not sure who will be next...but my money is on Jack Riewoldt when the time is right...hahah he hasnt played a game...but has leadership smacked all over him.

Next RFC captain is yet to evolve. We will know him as he emerges over the next few years.

It's such a laugh to be discussing this after some pseudo experts did some sort of exhaustive intellectual analysis and came up with Johno. Sometimes all the intellectual bull$hit overlooks the fact that leadership tends to be natural responses to unnatural situations. Look at the interactions between these "men" and for mine the leader is self-selecting. Right now it's Bowden - but only for the moment. Sure Johno makes a call at the toss of the coin (haven't seen him get much success there either), but it seems from vision I've seen that it's Bowden barking encouragement, directing traffic and flying whatever flages get flown.

Fear not though, for as much as I really like Bowdo the man - another more natural contender will emerge for there is a leadership vacuum - the coach though will hear it coming, players will move to it, the player himself probably won't even realise he's doing it. The vacuum will be filled - it has to. It is the natural order of group dynamics.

Sadly, I think the club may try the trendy co or multi captaincy with such an obvious vacuum at the moment (well obvious to me and few hundred of you it would seem).

If I had to guess a future captain after the club's "trendy period", it would probably be Dean Polo. Audacious, he talks it up through his mouth and deeds, sees a risk and makes it look an obvious pathway - he's not yet quite a natural, but he is the only one I've seen that could be by the way he goes about his footy business. Perhaps Cleve Hughes, don't know, need to see a bit more of him - but so far he naturally demands the ball by his very presence - not a bad attribute.

"Other"

Other being Richo, he is a senior leader with a heart and soul. Not many of the senior leaders would come close to him for passion and there are far too many youngsters still needing support and nurturing at the RFC. :clap
