PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

In my much younger years I used to marvel at the aerial wonders performed by Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. Both were famed Wide Receivers for the then NFL dominant Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers between 1974 and 1979 won 4 Superbowls, a then NFL record. Both were very tall, over 190cm, very athletic & agile players who had amazing pace, leap & overhead marking skills.

To borrow from Wikipedia,
A wide receiver is an offensive position in American and Canadian football. Only players in certain positions are eligible to catch a forward pass. The two players who begin play at the ends of the offensive line are eligible receivers, as are all players in the backfield. Since these two receivers begin play as the offensive players nearest the sidelines, they are referred to as "wide" receivers.

A wide receiver is a tall and very fast receiver who begins at the very wide ends of the offensive line.

Over the last few weeks many of us have marvelled at the performances of Richardson on a wing. And on the weekend we had a taste of something similar with Polak.
My thoughts then took me to the possibility that there could be a major overhaul to the structure of the AFL offensive layout. Rather than lining up in traditional offensive positions, is there the possibilty that highly mobile, tall forwards should start on each wing, then when the team gains possession out of the centre square, or rebounding from defense, these tall AFL wide receivers should be charging from the wing towards receiving the ball at the HF 50m line, ready to have a shot.

Richo appears to be doing this already on one wing. Possibly Polak might do it from the other, although Polak from 50m out is a long odds bet.

The idea is to create a less predictable set of options.

Anyway, half food for thought!
