The Northey era-the only time in recent memory when our club had a heart

Looking back at the team poster from the Northey era.....there were some mega duds in that list as well...Lounder the Flounder....Bannick...two losses as high draft picks.....There were duds on every line...guys with questionable disposal BUT ALL had an undeniable heart. There was three things they wanted. 1. To play for Swooper. 2 To play for the Tigers with pride and passion. 3. To play for each other!

What a pathetic group we have now who seemingly lack the three key ingredients to succeed. What a great decision by Daphne. A masterful move to axe Northey only to see him succeed elsewhere and form a group who wanted to play for him. EVen now he has taken a group of kids, moulded a team and won a premiership! The man was a legendary player, an amazing speaker and was a sensational coach.

Perhaps the bench polishers in the box can have a look at Northey's example...see what he did and try to develop some credibility for themselves as at the moment they have stuff all going for them! Sack the lot of them! All of them!

Maxfield averaged 13 possessions and 1.8 tackles in 89 games at Richmond.

For some reason he has this self perpetuating myth of being a great player. We were right to move him on.
i think after 4 yrs maxfield had just started to dramatically improve those figures.in other words he had just finished his apprenticeship and walked out. and walked out is the take i have on it. he wanted a lot more money.
i think northey just wanted a bit of security and demanded an extension.

Exactly. He was going to leave no matter what, from what I've been told
i dont believe this to be true. yes in the end he was going no matter what. i think it became a bit bitter as negotiations broke down.

I loved that team, hence my avatar.

But we should remember that it wasn't exactly a high skill team either. It's basic kick it long to Benny game plan would have struggled in the modern era of hyper flooding.

Gee that team had heart though.

I think big bad Mal Brown played a part in Swooper leaving. The 2 never got along.

Maxfield went onto captain Sydney, so who ever is questioning his talent is missing something here. Maxfield didt just get the ball and handpass when ever he got it, he kicked the ball and he kicked it well.

Wallace has had a team that cop a flogging every year! Good teams that have heart dont get smashed all the time, our heads go down easy and we lack the passion that the team of 95 had.

Other supporters can go on and read this to think that we are stupid for talking about a year we never won the flag, but after Thursday night all you can do is think about the good times we had as a club. I even enjoy watching games from 94 like on queens brithday when we gave it Collingwood by eleven goals or our first win in Adelaide.

I dont care why Northey or Maxfield left, thats not the point, the point is we lost 2 key figures in what made us a passionate team that year and we have struggled to have anything since that matches that and thats why this topic was opened.

He moved on

I think the reality of both 1995 was that we had poor skills, average tackling and superb hardness and ball getting ability.

I think now we have poor skills, abysmal tackling, average hardness and ball getting ability.

For an obviously clever person, it is incredible that Wallace hasnt built a skillful list in 5 years and hasnt addressed the issue of his teams always being the worst tackling teams in the AFL - despite publically acknowledging its importance.

Northey was a great motivator, seems we've lacked that for some time.

Yep. Great motivator. In 95 we were to play Melbourne and were hot favourites to win. Melbourne was struggling and Jim Stynes was out of form. We lost the game and Stynes killed us BOG.
Reporter asked him how he turned it around and Stynes said he listen to an old motivation tape that Northy put together for him when he was at the Demons. Listened to it the night before and it pumped him for the game.

Northey always knew how to get the best out of a player.

His biggest misstake in his coaching career was going to Brisbane.

He was a great coach.

IN so many ways this typifies Richmond. We finally get a coach that got the absolute most out of the players we had (and there were a few duds on that list), and we move him on straight away.

Now we have had 4 bad choices in a row that have got nothing out of the players. Frustrating is an understatement.

Exactly claw. Maxfield left for money. Totally mercenary. Stuff him.

Northey got us into the finals for the 1st time in 13 years playing a hard, tough, uncompromising brand of footy at a reasonable skill level. God forbid that he would seek a contrcat extension!! Why the *smile* wouldn't he?? He was doing a great job but the clowns in charge at the time, Daphne and Malone, still had romantic thoughts of Sheedy returning so brushed Northey off. Typical RFC fools.

1995 was the best year of my adult RFC supporting life. A very passionate team who were extremely competitive and didn't get flogged (until the preliminary final) and some great wins playing exciting footy; particularly on Anzac eve against North and a flogging of reigning premiers West Coast in Melbourne.

But then they appointed Walls and the rot set in ::) We have never recovered.

He actually did a lot more than that. IIRC he had an offer from Brisbane for more money and longer, he gave the club an ultimatum without any time to properly consider it and ultimately broke his contract with the club which had a year left to run. Look obviously in hindsight the club should have acceded to his demands but don't hold Northey up as some sort of saint, coaches want clubs to behave ethically with them but he was the one who behaved unethically not the club.
