I'm happy with how our sides developing. But as I've been saying on a few threads, most young players need time to develop. The system has gone through changes that dictate they don't get as much time as they once did, wages, list sizes etc, but the expectations of some fans and 'experts' of some players are getting ridiculous.

In the olden days when I was a kid, lots of players were late developers. Lists were big and wages small. Didn't get a game until early 20s, then in and out of the side for a few seasons, before becoming a key player in mid 20s. Jim Jess and Darren Millane are 2 that spring to mind. Not everyone is a Tim Watson, Roach, Judd or Deleidio. A lot of people pay lip service to this fact, then come out and say "pattison won't make it' or 'Jackson hasn't got it'. If J. Jess was a draftee now there'd be people on PRE saying 'will not make it hasn't got it'

Support the young blokes, take the trip with 'em. Sure they won't all make it we all know that, but think before you post and err on the side of positive-ness.

The kids are our future and i thought that they are what provides with polarity on one issue in regards to the members whereas we all have differing opinions about other issues.
The majority of our kids are exciting especially, Lids, Bling, Meyer, Raines (a revelation), Hughes and JON, whilst Jackson and Hartigan show plenty. Patto is a project and has shown the odd sign. Then there is Polo who has done well this year after not even looking like it at all last year (and i was one who was a bit concerned by him after watching him at Coburg alot last year). Not forgetting we also have a classy running defender to come in Casserly who is the forgotten man at RFC this year.

The future looks good and come the October draft hopefully with another 5 or 6 kids of quality the future this time next year will look even better!!!!!!

Great post TS. Well said and something that needs to be mentioned on this site. Whether it gets through remains to be seen. :clap

I would say by and large the youngsters are very well supported on PRE.

I agree, but PRE has a lot of posters and quite a few react to a poor game by a young player by completely writing hime off, thats what is getting to me.  Its OK to say 'X player was poor needs to go back to Coburg', or 'needs to improve kicking etc' thats fine,  But 'Hopeless, wont, make it, waste of a pick' etc is over the top and fails to grasp what footy is about.

I also know we're only human and can have a bit of a rant after a flogging.

Its also OK I reckon to start singling out players for particular pressure and scrutiny once they've played, say 30 or 50 games.  Take Rodan for example, I have real doubts.  I had them early but never said 'won't make it'.  Now, I will say it, hes had chances to show his wares, knee injury and all.  Krakouer as well was deservedly put under the microscope, Pettifer and Shultz as well.  These players are at the age when they are placed under more scrutiny and have to consistently produce and improve.

Its mainly what people have said about Patto that has got me fired up.

Yep, craig, imagine with another 4 guns out of this years super dupe draft? Great stuff

The pressure will come at the end of the season, and the next couple of end of seasons.

For the last couple of years it has been easy to drop players off the list. There have been plenty of duds to drop off. But the rules of the AFL state that the senior list of teams are 38 + outside vets + remaining rookies up to a total of 44 players. The AFL also state that a minimum of 3 players must be delisted each year, although the real number is probably around 6.

Over the last 2-3 years of list changes, the Tiger senior list has grown younger and the number of duds have declined dramatically. What happens when there are no more duds to delist or trade. What happens when every player on the list is a valued part.

When that comes, and it hasn't come yet, the pressure will be on the younger players.

Good work Phanto and spot on but i can still think of a fair few who are disposable players without too much fuss, but i live in hope that their time is nigh. ;)

I think this issue comes down to the historical period that you live in.

Twenty years ago it would be very difficult to tell you who lead the lead in inside 50's or who the latest under age sensation was and how he was going.  Now I just flick on the computer and I can tell you anything about any player or any game I want.

I can compare  Judd to Lids,  Dal Santo to Myer and use all this things as measuring points to judge our youngsters.  The information super highway has made everything much more accessible and much more "what have you done for me lately". We want results today, we want to see improvement today, we want to read about how great our kids are coming along today, not tomorrow.  Maybe because we are starved of on field sucessbut I think there is another factor.

Ten or fifteen years ago as a kid, I had to wait for Friday's paper to come out to see who is in the side and then if I new player was playing I'd wonder what he is like.
Now I know where Matty White has come from, what injury problems he has had in the past, what areas he is strong in, what areas he is weak in, where he grew up, and even what  his school teachers think of him.

And guess what? I know all this but have only seen about 8 minutes of Matty actually play footy.  That is where the pressure comes from, the access to so much information builds our expectations to massive levels.

Good post.

Its usually around this time of the season that people start speculating who should be de-listed, who should not be on list etc.

Already I can see people going to call for Staff & Chaffey to retire, however theres no player at this stage that you be close to de-listing, which has not happened at tigerland for a while.

Superbly articulated Pooper Scooper! :clap

The superhighway now goes past every armchair expert - and the expectations become unrealistic at times. ;D

What an intelligent thread bravo all. :clap

Absolutely agree Phantom, I think this year is the last time we will be able to get rid of obvious players. I honestly don't want to put the mark of doom on players but you would have to say the Staff and Chaff are in line bigtime, only because of what their bodies are telling the club.

Means we have to find two or three more and these aren't so obvious and are likely to surprise us (decision will be based on factors more than we see on gameday). You would want to have a very good attitude I reckon around the club and at training at the moment.

If Tivva and Krak survive (odds are in their favour at the moment I'd say) will it be on one year contracts?
