The reason behind Jake King keeping #46

i have never been big on the sntimaentality attached to numbers and often thought we could do away with them altogether, but this is a great story and its made me realise how important some of the symbolic stuff is!

great work Kingy! more power to u man!

One season does not make a player i remember this time last year
most people where in love with Howat and look at him now.

TM, big big difference between king and howat, u can see it in king he has the desire, hunger and no fear attitude. He will be around for a very long time.

Great story, love this kids passion and will to win on the field, and his compassion off the field, sounds like a leader in the making.

I like King, he's obviously a quality bloke. But I think the club did the right thing if this were the case. Let's face it, he had a good year, but he's still a small player who can't play a KP who didn't exactly set the world on fire.

When he gives us a reason to give him the big bucks, then pay the man. Until then, there's plenty left still to prove.

Didnt exactly set the world on fire ? Dont agree there.

Lets not forget he stood up in a side whereby backline entry was as rampant as warneys text habits.

Its a bit surprising he didnt get the standard five year Simmo deal or the slightly lesser 3 year Krak special offer.
Maybe someone doesnt have complete faith in his ability to back up this year
I think he is potentially a real CRACKER and adds a bit of ferocity to a timid backline

A 1 Year contract is pretty *smile* poor RFC, i am embaressed by that actually. We were lucky not to lose him.

I think one year is all we supporters would be able to handle if King has a shocker in 2008...imagine the bitching if he got 3 years. Remember, Clinton King had a good year once.

Jake is not a natural football talent. He's had to work very hard to achieve what he has. The fact he has made it onto the list is a credit to his workrate, and I wish him well, but I'm pleased RFC has stuck to a short term deal.
How many good players have we lost over the last 10 years due to being out of contract? ;)

Me too. He goes like the clappers but I hope he will not be in our best 22 by the end of the year.

To put my comment into context, I rate Foley as having set the world on fire in 2007. Would be happy loading up a big contract for him.

Jake King played some good games and a fair few average ones. He did best where he got under the guard of other teams that didn't rate him, especially running off his man. His disposal and decision making coming out of defense were questionable at times (although this did improve), but then he was flattered by Raines' comparatively poor year.

The guy who really stood up in the backline in 2007 was Will Thursfield. We can build around him. Not sure I can honestly say the same thing about King.

All that being said, if he backs up his improving form in 2008 and takes another step up, then sure, review his terms. But I maintain that he still has a lot to prove, and this time around he might find a few more talented kids putting some pressure on his place in the team.

Agree with you Bidsumore, real little goer, but people getting carried away again after 1 part season. Needs to improve and step up again on 08 otherwise will be overtaken.
Sure he's a gutsy, determined little fella but a lack of tools may see him found out.
If he becomes a "cult" figure, good on him, but if he doesn't step up he may not be in our best 22 and perhaps he shouldn't be, a reflection of lack of development of other players more than Jakes abilities

Irate Kingy as a good hard goer with a bit of mongrel in him. He's done a great job to get off the rookie list but if we have to set up our best team with him in it we'll still be bottom three.(as much as I hate to say it)which is a shame 'cos if we could get a Chris Newman's kicking with the mongrel of Kingy we'd be on the right track

There's a full page, full colour pic of Jake on the inside cover of the 2007 Annual Report.

Go Riggs! :clap

Ms Tantie.

Kingy's a good hardnut back pocket, had an excellent rookie season and well deserves his senior contract.
He gave us more run out of the backline than anyone else and if you watched properly he didn't just run blindly as fast or far as he could.
He has bloody good awareness and timing in either dishing off to a supporting teammate or forcing the opposition to hesitate leaving himself room to offload or carry further down field.
There were a few clangers early in his season as he tried to find the tempo of AFL and a couple of howler kicks late in the last few games of the year, that fortunately didn't affect the overall result of the games.
If Jake continues on from his first seasons performance I can't see any reason for him not to make a hundred plus game career and get a bit of cult status happening along the way.
