the reason why campbell should not be coach

After listening to triple M pre game last night, Gary Lyon and co were talking about Wayne Campbell being the next in line at Punt road. The panel were saying that Wayne's only had 18 months apprentiship and wasn't ready to be in charge atm. By saying this all the panelist's were saying that we need someone with experience like Malthouse or Mark Williams.

Jack Dyer had no coaching experience when he was appointed.

Gary Lyon has no backbone, or brain. Why listen to his rubbish?

I agree, we certainly need an expirienced coach. I would love to see Malthouse get the job. The thing that has amazed with him is the way the kids over at collingwood have developed! I have thought for years they aren't much chop yet they still continue to impress on the field.

Campbell was a very smart footballer but not all smart footballers can coach.

I don't even know if Campbell was a "smart" footballer. He's now coaching a Brownlow Medialist and Grand Final winner in Ben Cousin's and the other mid fielders
like Brett Delidio, Shane Tuck, Trent Cotchin, Nathan Foley.

God give me the strength to oust Campbell as mid field coach. For a start Cousins is way way way in front of Campbell as a midfield footballer. Campbell comes from an era of Walls, Frawley and Wallace, losing era's all 3, he has a lot of mental scaring of losses and some pretty timid and woeful losses at that whilst he was playing (not that he was directly responsible but he was part of it, particularly as Captain).

Campbell is not up to coaching the Richmond playing group, he doesn't have the knowledge base or experience necessary, he needs a few more years under his belt at a successful club in an assistant's role before you could even think of him as a possible Richmond Coach and I still say there would be other's far better qualified out there.

It really concerns me that "media experts" get to project their opinion on who/what is best for a respective club.

No one ever questions their motives!!!!!!

I mean seriously - how can Wayne Campbell be considered an even realistic option????

- never played in a successful club
- was not a successful player
- no physical presence
- captain of club by default (Knights was pushed aside)
- limited coaching experience
- currently an assistant coach on a team that hasn't won a game!!!!!

Someone scratch the surface and you'll find that Lyons/Campbell are mates - or have shared financial interests etc.

Honestly - we are down in the dumps at the moment.

Once it becomes impossible to play finals football - and once they formally announce that Terry's tenure is over - then we will need to rebuild/find some positive news.

I can not think of a more 'mediocre' decision than Campbell :'(

Either go young - Hardwick / Buckley / Hird (how can Campbell even compare with this group????)

or

go with experience - Matthews/Malthouse/Pagan (sorry Sheedy out - and Williams no good)

IMH (and very concerned) O

Good post.

If we appoint WAYNE CAMPBELL as Coach I will :vomit

He was a RECEIVER on the field...left it to Knighta, Freezer and later Cogs to feed the ball out to him.

We can't get the hard pill as it is now...and you want Campbell to coach us...Get Real !

Simple really, no player that has played at Richmond from post 1982 to now, should be even contemplated as the next coach of Richmond. Too many scars, plus they've most likely never even played finals, and the club wants to win a flag. Nope that will not happen if Richmond go down this path.
The only pre 82 ex Richmond player that should be considered is David Cloke.Played in finals for the Tiges and Collingwood, was tough and respected, has been a successful coach albeit not at Afl level, might be able to poach his son's back that really should not have played anywhere else other than Richmond. That surely would stir the pot.

I've never met Wayne Campbell intimately, so I do not have a personal experience to reflect on.

As a spectator watching football, I can say:
1. From 1991, Campbell was an exciting but underrated player in the Tiger midfield.
2. Chose to go into the Tiger inside midfield when he had the option, like another, of falling back into an outside role.
2. He was my favourite Tiger player from about 1994 to 2002.
3. His game tagging Crawford, in about 2003, the Stafford elbow game, where the boys came back from nowhere, was one of the best pieces of selfless, team-orientd footy that I've seen.

Still remember sitting just near the Tiger interchange bench. Campbell came off at half time bright red. On a hot day too. You could tell he was running on empty. Yet he kept on to blanket Crawford out of the game.

Don't know him as a person or as a coach.
But he was one of my favourite players of the 90s.

I always thought that Cambo was a pretty good player for us. Definitely a NO to the coaching gig though.

Nah serious, anyone with half a brain would agree that Campbell is not the man. Campbell has been discussed at great lengths in other threads and the general consensus around the place is big fat NO! As much as I have supported Gary March, I just pray to god that his contingency plan isn't having Campbell as caretaker.

Agree.
