The storm before the calm...I hope

I must be in the minority here, as I am becoming more disillusioned with the state of footy more each year.

I hated the NAB cup so much with its bastardised rules and gimmickery, that I didn't watch a complete game.
The rules commitee have tried to justify themselves a paypacket by continually changing and chopping a once great game.
Leave it alone and respect the games core values FFS!
The AFL seem intent to take all physical content out of the game....at all costs.
They are also intent on speeding the game up to as breakneck speed as it can possibly muster and will bend/change any rule to do so.
The game to me resembles a hybrid mix of basketball and water polo (keepings off) with some random kicking sometimes involved.

If it was just the game evolving then it would be kind of inevitable, but its being forced upon us and the players and coaches ect.
That to my mind is disrespecting what made the game great.
I'd be curious to know if other major sporting codes have their rules changed every year just to suit the codes govering body at the time, with little input from players, coaches and fans?

I love Richmond for all its woes and never ending heartache, but at this stage I'm looking forward to watching a real contest of footy that involves its old fashioned charm and charisma......local footy, where contests and clashes are still part of the game.

I don't always agree with you Struggling One, but on this subject I am with you 100% Why do the AFL do it?? Is it for TV appeal, listening to little Bobby's mummy...."Don't hit my little boy," syndrome, or what???? What really bugs me these days is the constant handballs. More like keepings off, or perhaps the dreaded Rugby League.....should be known as Throwball not Football...ARL that is!!

I'm with you there struggler. I've really lost interest because of the rule changes, the contrived draw, the favouring of some teams over another. I used to watch a few games a week but usually only watch our game now. I love Richmond and am really looking forward to round 1 just the same.

I also agree with the above posts. Like Rosy said, I used to watch multiple games every week but can't be bothered with it anymore. I also hated the NAB Cup and thought the nine pointers and playing on after a poster was complete rubbish. It's just not what it used to be and is becoming soft. But I'll still always be excited to watch our boys every week if that makes sense.

Exactly Bubbles. I've been carping on about the gentrification of AFL football here on PRE for years. Its a passion of mine. A few politically correct "soccer mum" posters have disagreed with me over the years, but we are now on the cusp of seeing a downhill slide in AFL interest...I'll guarantee it.

Forget all the bs that Demetriou and that legalese, butt covering little weazel of a man Anderson come out with...their propaganda is just that...false propaganda. The vast majority of football followers have had a gutful of where the game has headed over the last 4 or 5 years under this current administration, pushing things to the point where many of us have just about lost interest in the game.

I love Richmond. Always will. But as for AFL football itself, its a contrived, synthetic and all too often boring game nowadays. 6 or 7 years ago I used to go to 40-50 live games a year, and then watch heaps more on tv. Now I just go to Richmond games and watch the odd live and tv game as a supplement.

How many of US (i.e. true footy followers) were asked if WE wanted to see the game become nothing more than an end to end show of keepings off ? As Wayne Carey says, if that's what the AFL's trying to create, why wouldnt we all just watch soccer or basketball instead ?

Truth of the matter is we don't count. We're already hooked,so they don't bother asking us.

Must attract ever more soccer mom bandwagoners, especially if there live in west sydney or the gold coast. The're they games future. ::)

Only problem with that is the're the first ones to jump off when the next 'big thing' comes along.Like soccer ..or John Farnhams return.

meanwhile us suckers getter ever more aliented till we'll eventually spit the dummy too.

Yep, once you love the game you love for it life but not with the same passion.

So many people getting dissalusioned and it was just announced that Demetriu ( who cares how to spell his name) will get a pay rise into a seven figure sum. Apparently a 76% pay rise in the last few years.

Makes ya sick doesn't it.

How big a petition would it take?

I don't know, but count me in.
Wilful destruction is a criminal charge isn't it?

What exactly were Andersons credidentials for the role again BTW??
Just the sight of that public schoolboy head of his gets me in a fit of fury.

I must admit that I am over AFL footy, I've always said, "I support Richmond, I don't support the AFL". I'm a 15 year member, will go to about 10 home games this year, watch what I can on TV or listen on the radio, but rarely will I watch anything not involving Richmond any more.
I thought I was just maturing, but I see it's not just me, so someone's doing something wrong.

No, its AFL.

I stress its not football either, because I still enjoy watching the local footy where theres not 100 cameras big brothering down to the micro-second every flick of a hand and brush of a jumper looking for another unwarranted suspension, or 30 kicks across the backline to an unmanned palyer before the ball propels forward.
You even get to see shirtfronts, tackling and marking contests!
