PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Took my 5yo son Stuart to the Swans Super Junior Footy Clinic today @ Manuka Oval here in Canberra. The Swans were mostly represented by their young players except for Leo Barry. These Swans guys made my young bloke and all his mates feel really special as they took them through different fun training drills.

After the clinic whilst every kid was receiving a footy bag which included a couple of footies and heaps of footy info packs I found myself standing next to Leo Barry - he noticed the Tiger Cap I was wearing and said you guys should be in for a good year. I said do you reckon - his reply

"Yep - your blokes the last couple of years have just been learning the game - now with a bit of size about them and the class some of your young players have - you will be hard to toss."

I asked him who impresses him most in the Tiger team - he said "I only concentrate on the player I am on and he said the kid Tambling is the hardest half forward to play on - he is slippery plus quick and everytime I got the ball he tackled me. He is the hardest half forward to read and play on."

I said you are only saying that because of my Tiger Cap - he said "no - he is one of the hardest players I find to hold"

He added "Plus ya got Richo - he is a champion" He said the Tigers always give us a run - I laughed and told him I always drive the 3 hours up the Hume to watch the Swans v Tigers at the SCG and over the last few years I have always driven home miserable. He laughed!

I asked him how do you reckon the Swans will fare this year?

Leo answered "We'll be there - we played poorly last year and only just missed out on 4th spot - should've got it had we played to our potential - ya know Barry had a few issues and Goodsey wasn't really fit, we had a few like that who were down a bit and its hard to cover good players when they are not firing. I reckon we are a top 4 side again this year - we have a number of good strong young players Roos has been holding back - they'll come on this year."

I didn't realise it but there was a crowd of Swans supporters around us listening to every word and when he said that they all cheered.

Then when my son arrived with his footy bag - Leo gave his hair a ruffle and said "don't listen to ya dad - you barrack for the Swans mate" To which Stuart said "no Tigers are better than Swans"

A good day was had by all the kids.

Stuart and I didn't stay for the match as I had to get back to the shop - watched parts of the game on Foxtel in the shop - Swans looked a bit ordinary but then again they do that every NAB cup.........
