The team to meet Carlton has picked itself.

l like Edwards as a player so i would have him in the side. It is always hard picking the team for Round 1.

He was OK against Freo, but appaling against Collingwood.

Running off a back flank, he makes Mc Mahon look like Leon Cameron with his disposal. Hide him in a forward pocket if needs be, he can find the footy alright, but his turnovers could well lose a match if Terry is serious about him on a back flank.

This was the team i posted for an early shot at the round 1 team.

B: Raines - Thursfield - Moore
HB: McMahon - McGuane - Newman
C: Deledio - Cotchin - Johnson
HF: Cousins - Riewoldt - Richo
F: Morton - Vickery - Brown
R: Simmonds - Tuck - Foley
INT: White - Post - Bowden - Tambling

After having a look at the NAB cup and heading down to training a few times over the summer this is my go at an updated and injury considered team.

B: Raines - Thursfield - Moore
HB: McMahon - McGuane - Newman
C: Deledio - Cousins - Jackson
HF: Brown - Riewoldt - Richo
F: Morton - Shulz - Edwards
R: Simmonds - Tuck - Foley
INT: White - Graham/Browne - Bowden - Tambling

FWIW i don't think Nahas has shown enough to be picked round 1. There is still quite a few players in front of him.

I think we'll find that the team will come from who played on the Gold Coast. And from all reports Browne kicked butt over Gus so he may get the nod.

i was looking back at previous posts on predictions for round 1 came across my effort. not to bad how did everyone else go.. ;D

B: Chris Newman Kelvin Moore Andrew Raines

HB: Joel Bowden Luke McGuane Jordan McMahon

C: Shane Edwards Shane Tuck Matthew White

HF: Nathan Brown Matthew Richardson Jack Riewoldt

F: Ben Cousins Jay Schulz Richard Tambling

Foll: Troy Simmonds Brett Deledio Nathan Foley

Int: Will Thursfield Andrew Browne Mitch Morton Daniel Jackson

Emg: Andrew Collins Dean Polo Alex Rance

Not a bad side. Would have liked to see Hislop and Rance in the picture but can live with it.

Good to see three solid players knocking on the door.

Just from reading last nights reports and allowing for an early recovery by Axel, I think the team should be,

B Thursfield Moore White
HB Polo Mcguane Rance
C Raines Deledio Richardson
HF Newman Riewoldt Cousins
R Brown Schulz Morton
R Simmonds Tuck Foley
Res Browne Bowden Tambling Thompson

Em Edwards Jackson McMahon.

Congratulations to first gamers Browne, Cousins, Rance and Thompson. :hihi

pretty close momentai

polo thompson rance omitted for your three emergencies

as fior your squad of 25 you only missed thompson for Collins

A QUESTION. What single thing cost us more than any other last yr? I think most would agree turnovers. What are the primary causes of turnovers? Yep you got it, poor skills and poor decision making. and of course pressure. the first two tend to break down easily under pressure if there are flaws.good skills tend to hold up under pressure.

A QUESTION. What has become the the two most important areas of the ground? in these two areas you have to be clean precise quick and smart as well as tough. yep you guessed it, the hb line and running backs, aalso the midfield.

so with the above in mind. why would anyone pick 6 suspect players out of nine? 6 who lack good skills, are poor decision makers, and panic under pressure. whose skills have been found wanting under pressure.are generally lacking smarts and some are out and out one way footballers.
not to mention the backline picked is desperately short of height and size.

thats what this side contains

yep i can just see white edwards tuck raines mcguane mcmahon streaming forward to do nothing more than pick out a carlton player.and then watch the ball go back over their heads for a goal.

we all may like certain players but are we picking sides in an attempt to minimize team weakness or are we just letting the head rule.

i cant believe any thinking supporter would want to see so many butchers of the ball coming of our hb and centre lines and expect them to deliver to advantage yet alone with precision.
maybe its just that people dont look at player deficiency maybe they wear the jumper thats good enough. more than likely they just dont recognise the deficiency to start with.hence the incredulity when their favorite players are criticised.at the end of the day we are just supporters i have to ask whats the clubs excuse for ignoring such obvious deficiency.

Not a bad round 1 side....looking at the blues team i would be very concerned for season 09 if we lost to this bunch...some real shockers still running around that have been ignored by the over hyped media.

My side:

FB: Andrew Raines Will Thursfield Kelvin Moore

HB: Chris Newman Luke McGuane Jordan McMahon

C: Ben Cousins Shane Tuck Matthew Richardson

HF: Nathan Brown Jack Riewoldt Richie Tambling

F: Joel Bowden Jay Schulz Mitch Morton

Foll: Troy Simmonds Brett Deledio Nathan Foley

Int: Shane Edwards,Matt White, Andrew Browne, Daniel Jackson

Have to agree with that. Hopefully the named side isn't the structure we're going to see most of the night.

Thanks Dirty. I think this side will beat Carlton even if Fev is fit. But down the road any side that has non accountables will get murdered by the Cats. :nopity

Considering the concerns people have with our skill level, especially in the back half , I wonder if Collins has been considered for a HBF role.

By all reports his skill level is good and his lack of size may not hurt him as much.

Perhaps this would be a better back 6

Tambling Moore Thursfield

Collins Mcguane McMahon

I was thinking Bling hasn't started a game in the forward pocket in a while. I'd also be pretty surprised if Morton didn't start on the field and Jackson get first crack on Judd.

I dont want to be a killjoy about Nahas but he's had in the senior NAB cup games/practice matches he's kicked one really nice goal and done a few good chases. All you can say so far is that he's a good VFL player. I'd be in no hurry to promote him. If Browne comes up it because we have a glaring ruck weakness and it would be at the expense of Gus in the selected side. If Nahas comes up its not going to be at the expense of Morton or NB - so which midfielder/utility misses out for an unproven jockey sized forward who can chase?
A midfielder who wont chase?
