Re: Richmond History Book - 'The Tigers' [Merged]

Hello

It was simply a matter of who did we want to cover the 80's and we felt Roach, Weightman were stronger for that decade.
Having said that, their are 1,100 odd richmond players who have played, so sadly their cant be a chapter on each player, but I certainly will keep in mind the option of Rioli as a chapter

Hi Rhett,
Again my hearty congratulations.

The book was an enjoyable read but my only minor disappointment was that there was not a piece on Maurice Rioli.
Being named in the Indigenous team of the century is no mean feat and I would have thought worthy of a special mention.
Maurice was widely regarded as one of the greatest Aboriginal footballers to play the game.
Any reason that he was not mentioned a little more?

Perhaps in an updated version you could expand a little further on this great Tiger.

Well done Thanks again

ToO :)

Top post ToO :clap

He wasn't called Magical Maurice for nothing. Easily the most graceful and balanced style of any player I've seen at Richmond. Always looked so fit and immaculate in a Tigers jumper. The only player I've seen since who reminds me of him is Andrew McLeod for Adelaide.

If there is to be an updated version of the Tiger's history then I'd suggest a special chapter on the contribution of indigenous players to RFC. Rioli, Michael Mitchell, Phil Egan etc through to the more recent players....... plus information on the Indigenous Academy(or whatever it is to be called) planned for Punt Road. The other relevant aspect of course is an annual blockbuster against Essendon which celebrates the Aboriginal culture and contribution.

Mitchell, now there is a good idea. I have an autographed Mitchell jumper I got in 1990 before they played the Eagles at Subi.

I'd love to know his story, particularly what caused his sad and premature departure from AFL football.

Copped a very bad knock to the head in a pre-season practice match at Bayswater against North (from Mick Martyn???) in the same season he won mark and goal of the year. Retired mid-season the following year after doctors told him more bumps to the head could cause permanent damage. He was a pretty keen chess player from memory so he would've valued his grey matter.

Re: Richmond History Book - 'The Tigers' [Merged]

Thanks for the info.

Not sure if any of you have seen it, but when he was playing for Claremont, he took the most amazing mark standing on a subiaco player. In reality it probably wasn't a mark in the end, but it had to be paid simply on effort.

As a Claremont fan, I was very excited when we snaffled him on a form 4. I was dissapointed at the same time, because we could have got Guy McKenna, but instead went with Peter Wilson.

Yeah as I recall it was Mick Martyn. It was pretty nasty.

Just about everyone would've seen that mark as it was all over the TV at the time. Mitchell took about a season and a half to click in the VFL, but once he did he was an electric player. His second half of 1988 was one of the best purple patches I've seen by anyone.

Can remember Eagles coach John Todd saying in early 1987 that if he could pick any player from another club, he would choose Wilson. He may not've been a superstar but was still a very good player who put in 100% each week for Richmond.

Re: Richmond History Book - 'The Tigers' [Merged]

Yeah I didn't mind Wilson. Particularly enjoyed his chicken walk when questioning Karl Langdon's committment out at Waverley one day. (Pretty sure I've got player and venue right there.)

Hi Rhett,

Would there be any chance of getting the 2 books being sent to me signed by KB and Tommy (and yourself) even though I can't be in Melbourne myself?

Re: Book Signing 'The Tigers' with KB + Tom Hafey - Feb 15th

Hi Rhett.
Great book, which I received for my birthday at the start of the year.
This may be an obvious question, but is the book signing on the 15th Feb just for those buying the book from A&R there and then?
Or can those who already own the book bring it down and get it signed?

Re: Book Signing 'The Tigers' with KB + Tom Hafey - Feb 15th

The book signing is for those who buy the book at the Angus and Robertson store obviously.
You can bring one along I guess, but ideally if you can buy one at the store itself- as that is the purpose of the signing.

Heck, buy one , get it all signed, then give it to someone after Richmond wins the first NAB match that night

Re: Book Signing 'The Tigers' with KB + Tom Hafey - Feb 15th

Thanks Rhett,
For the obvious answer to an obvious question.
I'm sure I'll be able to think of someone to buy another book for.
