Now that it is just a matter of when Terry (& his long list of excuses) depart Punt Road, I thought I would remind everyone of the mistakes Terry has been involved in. Personally, the decision to draft K.Kingsley was the turning point. He lost me then. This list of mistakes excludes any mistakes we made when drafting kids, as this is the recruiters responsibility (although you could argue it is the coaches responsibility to develop the talent he is given):
2004
• Pick 65 M.Graham (Haw). D.Pratt, C.Bryan & E. Betts were available.
• Drafted T.Knobel in Pre-season draft. E.Betts still available.
• Stated we were aiming to kick 100 points every game & play exciting footy.
• Stated we would develop our own stars
2006
• Round 1: Thrashed by 115 points by Bulldogs. How can you not be ready for round 1?
• Delisted D.Rodan.
• Drafted Kingsley (Geel) in pre-season draft. C.Cloke was available.
2007:
• Gaspargate. Thumped by Geelong the following game by 157 points.
• Traded pick 19 to J.McMahon (WB). C.Ward, S.Selwood, & T.Pears available.
• Refused pick 28 for Jay Schulz. M.Motlop, B.Whitecross, J.McCarthy & L.Greewood available.
• Rookie draft: Used pick 1 on Clayton Collard (Fre). Wonaeamirri & Petrenko available.
• Rookie picked C.Howat again. C.Stokes, S.Valenti & B.Wilkes available.
• Retained Tivendale & Hyde.
2008:
• Traded pick 42 for Thompson (PA) M.Robinson available.
• Drafted Hislop (Ess) with pick 58. McCulloch, Nahas & Cockie available.
• Retained all players aged 30+ (incl. K.Johnson & J.Bowden)
• Retained Silvester as a Mature Rookie.
2009
• Round 1: Thrashed by 83 points by Carlton. How can you not be ready for round 1 (again)?
Painful memories, I know.
Surely, we should never trade (or recycle) again. At the very least, we should keep it to an occasional activity, when we have a specific need.
A leader needs to be big enough to admit errors, take responsibility and not blame everyone else.
We need a coach who is repaired to back their own coaching skills and do what they are paid to do. That is, develop the talent they have and play a game style that suits the talent on hand. We do not need another coach to walk in and already have the “rebuilding” excuse there. The list is no worse than North, Essendon & Collingwood. Most of the experts in the press tipped us to make the 8 this year.
