I am pretty happy with our drafting and while the trade period was a disappointment largely due to our inability to move on a couple of currently contracted over paid players, the overall result, (Gregs mark) for mine is about 8 out of 10.

I suspect that if we had had the opportunity we might have taken Dowler and Muston with our first two picks however they are both Hawks now...ce la vie.

One player whom I thought we might have chased was another Hawk, Cambell Brown who was out of contract. A small back, the guy has moxy and gets big kudos from me for having now two priors against Lloyd. And he can play, finishing top 5? in the b&f despite several holidays.

How will we line up??

The second year for last years recruits, who include some of the most exciting prospects to come to us since the 60's, will include greater opportunity for this group. We still have real problems in at least two positions and who will play there is anyones guess...B/p small and chf. However opportunities exist for players contending for other positions as well and of course a lot depends on the fitness of Browny and Cogs.

Just a shot but our team for Rd 1 vs Dogs could be,

B Meyer Gaspar Kellaway
HB J Bowden(Capt) Schulz Johnson
C Deledio (D V Capt) Coughlan (D V Capt) Tuck
HF Hall Pattison Pettifer
F Brown(V Capt) Richo(V Capt) Tambling
R Simmo Newman Rodan
Res P Bowden* J.O.N.* Knoble & Polo*
Em Hartigen Hyde Krak and Stafford.

The only problem with taking Campbell Brown is the baggage that comes with him, ie, Mal Brown, his father.

Goddess ::)
Johno will lead by example as he has for the last three years but I don't consider he is a natural at it..He is pretty quiet ...jmo.

For mine Lids IS a natural leader and his inclusion would be intended to send a message to the younger blokes that anything is possible.

How bad could he be.We are now pretty strong administratively & I don't see any evidence that he has misbehaved while Cambell has been with the Hawks?

Might also send the message that anything is possible without earning it.

Lids is only 18 he doesn't need and shouldn't have that kind of pressure on him. One day yes for sure. But in his second year? No way. I think your expecting way to much of him. I'll just be glad if he follows on from this years form and improves. Give him time.

Happy with Johnno as captain does his bit on the field and from what I can see does a great job with our younger guys.

B JacKson Gaspar Kellaway - Settled line with only Jackson as the ???
HB J Bowden Schulz Johnson - strong half back line
C Deledio Coughlan Tambling - strong centre line
HF Newman Pattison Pettifer - weakest line & is a worry (newman adds some hardness)
F Brown Richo Meyer - pretty good here (krak is a chance as well)
R Simmo Tuck Roden - not bad (roden is a ??)

Res Hartigan Polo Raines Hyde/Krak Hall - hall is the back up tall with 3 runners

Cant find spots for P.Bowden, Chaffey, Tivendale, Knoble or Stafford

I still think we will rely to heavilly on Richo & Browny to kick our goals, would like to see a creative medium fwd who can kick multiple goals and release Richo to the pocket or HFF. OR another tall marking mobile player that can play at FFWD and release Richo.

Maybe there is a spot for someone like CUPIDO - as much as i dislike him he could command a presence in our fwd line and make an impact.

Don't know how people can throw players like Meyer, Pattison, Tambling and even Schulz and Jackson into the line-up when they haven't proved anything yet.  Rodan is also a big if and Brown is not a certainty to come good.  As yet we have a very un-settled team and will have to unfortunately rely on the likes of Chaffey, Kellaway, Pettifer, Krakour, Hall, Hyde, Tivendale, P.Bowden etc.

How do you gain experience if you don't get it ?

Agreed, let some of the lesser senior players play most of the year for Coburg, let the kids get some experience and pick up a nice position in next year's superdraft.

Disagree harry,

roden will be a walk up start next year dont worry about that
Meyer will be as well - just needed to put on some weight (hopefully 2 pre seasons will help)
Tambling was straight in last year so he only needs a run without injuries and he will walk straight in
Pattison is the coaches pet and he will be developed into the fwd line
*smile* is a lay down mazere for CHB and will walk straight in
Jackson is the only iffy one - he has the size, speed and body - does he have the footy smarts (only time will tell)
brown we are told will be ready R1 - maybe not at last years capacity but a %50 Browny is better than most others - if he is fit he will play

Browny is stupid if he wants to play Round 1.

Why Round 1 when it's only the start of the season. He should calmly phase into the season from approximately Round 8-9-10 instead of rushing in from the start. At least his vacant position gives some of the kids a chance to show something.

Harry I think we are going to see a sea change in terms some of the 'old reliables' you have listed.

Last night at Club 80 Terry said he could see no point in bringing in to the club 28 yr olds who were nearing the ends of careers. In other words no more Mark Grahams. While we may have needed him last year ,its now time to allow some of our maturing younger players to come through, (or be gone.)

Chaffee, (the best of them) Krak, Stafford and Tivendale contributed little last yr.There is no benefit whatsoever in giving them countless opportunities to produce more of the same.

Time to see what Meyer, Pattison, Polo and maybe Jacko have learnt.

For what it's worth, I think you are closer to the mark there Harry. That doesn't mean I like it, but "doing a Hawthorn" hasn't been part of TW's formula so far, and would be surprised if he changes that to any great degree now. 2007 perhaps, but not 2006 with the list he currently has.

The steady and balanced education will continue for all the 2004 and 2005 draftees with, perhaps, one or two standing up early, while the maligned seniors will go around mostly again. :P

Perhaps this is true for the early rounds. However given the draw we've been handed next season, I don't think it'll be long before we see a fairly rapid changing of the guard. As has been said not much point in persevering with the tried and tested at this point. They had their opportunities last year and many came up short. Gotta start giving these kids some match practice.

Don`t know about that TOO

In a lot of circles Hughes was rated higher than Dowler anyway and Muston is having to go in for his second knee re-construction which puts him out for all next year . Bad luck for the kid but i reclon the Hawks have taken a huge gamble on that kid , one that i am glad punt rd. didn`t

All in all i have a very good feeling about the kids we have taken .

Lets hope it`s Richo < Cleve Hughes ;D

All the Brown kids should have fond memories of Punt Road, apparently we "allowed" them to make tens of thousands of dollars of phone calls back to Perth during the time their dad was working at the joint (at a time when the club was scraping up every cent it could to pay off the big debt from the late 1980's). >:(

I tend to think momentai has a point. I think it's sink or swim time for some of the kids.

Not that their form necessarily warrants senior selection - I mean they didn't set the world on fire on the VFL this year did they?

But allowing for another year's experience and physical development anything's posssible with young men. So let's see how those guys that have been on the list 3-4 years go and if they're not up to it - well, we'll soon find out.

With this in mind and taking into account the retirements of Campbell and Graham I think we'll see quite a lot of Moore, Rodan, Jackson, Raines, maybe Roach, Foley, Hartigan, Schulz, Meyer and Pattison this year.
