Third Quarter worries! [Merged]

This is a major concern for mine..

It has to be a mental thing. The players ease up and are not prepared to work hard enough for a full quarters. Have we played a full four quarters in terry's time there ?

Did we against the dockers this year ? Not sure

Against carlton that famous day we beat them by 80 odd point playing terry's triangle but even in that game when there was a chance to really go in for the kill we eased up.

Does the coaching staff push this through the players head to keep doing what they were doing the first half ?

Are they lazy?

Are they mentally soft ?

Its left to a few to keep running but most of the players basically stop running, working for each other and doing what they have to do if they want to be taken seriously.

Do they really want to be a good side or just a middle of the road?

Are they protecting themselves knowing that if they continue their good work they may get injured, lose their spot to a kid, etc.

BUT in saying this you do expect a side that has been poor, average , behind the score against us to fight back in the 3rd quarter. We did against the swans when we were so poor for a half of football with only 1 goal.

Until we erase this from our game we may never reach our full potential or be considered a serious side to challenge for the eight.

Up to you players !

Yep - we need to change things up at half time break to stop the rot. How about staying out on the ground for the break or going inside for 5 mins for the break and then back on the ground for the warm up? Terry was the first to initate the on the ground warm up, he should apply the same philosophy to the half time break.

The game was all over and we should have gone for the kill yet Terry puts richo behind the ball and the game almost went south.

Maybe he did it because he was concerned about our 3rd quarter efforts.

It is Terry AND the players....and really, a mentality we have had for a very long time.

There was a thread last week on here where I asked about when was the last time we killed a team by 100+ points.....it was Fitzroy in 1996.
And the time before that?
Who knows...

We NEVER play 4 quarters...even the two years we made finals (2001 and 1995) we never destroyed a team...our percentage has always been sh!te.
I agree. We cop thrashings as a matter of course, yet we never dish em out when we have the chance to. Mentally weak IMO- both in not putting up resistance when we are getting belted, and seeming to "relax" when we are on top. Something that seems to have plagued the club for many a year.

I agree its a mental, lazy effort is to blame.

It's not just the older players, it is the young ones also.

What happend to our professional sports shrink?

The thing that is a major concern is that those younger players then become our next batch of senior players and the cycle continues.

People bag the likes of Bowden, Tivendale, Hyde, etc for their state...yet at one stage, they were good young players.
Before them were the likes of Campbell, Rogers, Kellaway, Gale, etc....also classed back in the mid-90s as good young players emerging in the game.

The problems we have seem to breed like a parasite...going from host to host...era to era...generation to generation.
It is why I have been a strong advocate of a big purge at the club and I fear Wallace has taken far too long to do that. I would rather have had 3 years of big time pain and have a whole new bunch of kids coming through at one time instead of them learning bad habits off senior players that have been there far too long.

I forgot about our 3rd quarter fade outs until the match finished. Something needs to be done!!! Quick!

Dress them up in clown suits or get them all to read a book, do something different, change the mood change the scenary. Do something, he needs to improvise, I personally dont know how he does it, but I remember the best coaches would do something different. They would make each match its own, we must have the same computerised routine week in week out!!

The third quarter yesterday was pretty shocking, we only kicked one goal and we let Melbourne right back into the game. After Davey took that hanger, I was getting a bit worried.

Is it the older players or the hangers on around the team and the club (those members who have been there for years) who get in the kids ears and create this *smile* poor culture?

:hihi...so you reckon us idiots who have been pouring money into the club as players come and go, should be held responsible for the actions we are seeing (or not seeing)?
