This is getting ridiculous...

You aren't playing for sheep stations in the pre-season but... we have been decidedly average.

For better or for worse we will be playing the kids - there just aren't enough older players to keep them out. This year will give them opportunities and those that can't prove they can make AFL standard will literally have nowhere to hide.

As always with a young side we are going to have some inconsistent results and if we get a few injuries to our senior players then we are going to struggle because there just isn't any depth at the moment.

Going to be an interesting year and like Craig and Claw I am going to enjoy watching the kids evolve this year. If the results don't show and upward graph movement - then so be it. I won't be tearing up my membership card or ordering dung for the RFC's driveway.

I feel a bit sorry for Deledio. He is no doubt a high class footballer but is in the unfortunate position of being surrounded by so many, at best, average footballers, which is being kind to many of the players on the list. Therefore he cops more attention from supporters expecting big things of him immediately, comparing him to Judd etc. Think about this; would Judd be the player we now know if he was drafted by RFC? Almost certainly not; he would have been stuck in the mire of a mediocre club with a losing mentality; not with an extremely professional outfit with a winning culture, a superb track record of fast tracking player development and many high class footballers surrounding him. No doubt he would have been a very good footballer still, but I don't think he would have been the absloute champion we see now.

Unfortunately for Lids the old chestnut definitely applies:

"It's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys."

Let's not forget that the Eagles were an ordinary side when Judd went to the club. However with good recruiting and good development of the recruits, they have turned into a seriously good outfit. It has taken time but all has worked out for them.
Might come as a shock BT but they have played finals every year he has been at the club

You're right there CC. But in 2001, there were some ordinary efforts:

10 defeats > 10 goals

2 defeats > 100 points

8 defeats > 70 points

Since then, they've turned it around with youth.

It is typical of SOME tigers supporters that when things seem to be a little pear shaped some hunters come out looking for the scape goats. Be that Lids, Tambling or who ever. Lids is an easy target as he was a number one draft pick and a stand out amongst most so some people expect him to be getting 30+ possessions a game and winning games of his own boot. We all know that aint gonna happen just yet, but he may very arrive this year and start fullfilling some of the expectations. An average of 18.8 possessions a game is hardly shabby given the roles he has played during his development and a lot of people forget that.

Wallace is absolutely correct in dismissing the practise match form. Come Round 1 its a whole new ball game and 4 points at stake. I agree with him in what he says that the lack of practise match time with the structure in place is more concerning, especially the lack of game time Simmo will have coming into Round 1 given our reliance on him.

I think the last few weeks have shown just how valuable Simmo is to the "structure" with an underdone Noble and an inexperienced "Gus" having to shoulder the load against elite ruckman such as Spider and White.

A mate of mine who happens to be a Melbourne supporter who was at the game on the weekend commented that our lack of a recognised ruck structure really stood our to him as our biggest deficiency along with the obviously poor kicking for goal.

Patto may be forced into a greater support role earlier than he expected so lets hope he is ready to accept the challenge and step up. He may not be able to match it at centre bounces just yet, but he showed signs against the Swans he is capable of taking it up to them around the grounds.

Early rounds are critical and how Simmo comes back in those rounds will have a big influence on the outcome of some of those games IMHO.

Agreed our kids are not to blame for current position. Leave Lids alone he is most certainly least of any concern for the RFC.

Unrealistic expectation leads to upset, dissapointmtent , outrage and theneventually leads back to logic which..................................... eventually when one sees through it leads to the darkside ;)

We have nearly totally recruited for youth so we have to wait for another 1, 2 or 3 years for them to mature. Sorry but there are unlikely to be any shortcuts for real sucess.

what's the 'feeling' around the club anyone?

Things sure as hell seem doom and gloom to me over here from what I read on PRE.

The feeling from me CM is that the real footy can't start soon enough. Most threads seem to have the same discussion regurgitated. I reckon we're all hanging out for the ball to bounce on the hallowed ground of the G at 5.10 (ridiculous time) on April 1st. Then we can discuss the reality rather than the fantasy.

:gotigers

The reality is that my ringer is already starting to itch as we get closer to Round 1. Painful it will be.

Someone even went so far as to call Lids soft in another thread.

That was me. And you got to cop criticism where it is justified. Lids gives up the chase very quickly from the games I've attended - 3 so far in the pre-season including Wonthaggi (not to mention 05/06). He is just not that interested in playing both ways. It's a fact. Of course he has good attributes and he's a better player than most on the list. But that shouldn't make him immune from criticism.

Fair enough then...

For a second there I thought this was the most ridiculous post on this thread, but titn, no one is immune from criticism, I for one have become lazy and haven't even bothered in finding any faults in Lids because of the obvious, but from here on, I will be more observant of what you said.

Yes you are right BT but look how quickly they have turned it around. As CC pointed out, the Eagles have made the finals every year since recruiting Judd at the end of 2001. In 2001 they were at the bottom of the cycle but only stayed there for a very short time; they also missed the finals in 2000 but that was the first time since 1989. The point is that Judd has benefited from having his undoubtedly immense talent harnessed in an extremely professional football environment with a culture that demands success and does not tolerate mediocrity. This has played a huge part in turning him in to the champion he is today. I can't envisage that would have happened at RFC in the same period. Just look at the comparative records of RFC and WCE since 1987 when the Eagles entered the competition. WCE have missed the finals only 4 times!!! They are basically the antithesis of RFC.

Unfortunately for Lids he does not have this advantage; one hopes it will change in the not too distant future but it won't happen until the many poorly skilled players we have on our list are removed and replaced with highly skilled players. Alas it is a long process.
