thoughts on the draft

Would you suggest they should first all be written off as DUDS and then any that make it we can sing to the rafters about our awesome recruiting team? Good management of expectations.

Err, no. There is a healthy in between that doesn't dudify then just yet but also doesn't pump them up to be the next triple brownlow medallist. I think.

I like what we have done to our list. All of our recruit all tick of at least one of the following 3 - Speed, Endurance or elite kicking.

Same.

Happy to wait and see how Ellis goes, but Menadue & McKenzie were good pick-ups & I like picking up Short and Lambert as rookies.

Sorry, failed to put in the only joking widget thing (is there is such a symbol?), only to highlight the emotional swings and roundabouts of forum posters.

Sorry mate. My fault. I really need to start writing down who is bright and who isn't.

My nagging feeling is we will regret not taking Clem Smith at 52, but the strategy was clear and I am pleased we loaded up on runners. Ellis and Short look classy and Menadue could be a game-breaker. He was my favourite pick. Star potential.

Brightsiders, darksiders, WTF ...?

Who said footy fans don't read Twilight :hihi

Getting Short & Lambert via the rookie draft were my favourite picks and they complete Ellis, Menadue and Drummond. I would have taken Short at any pick after 52. I've quibbled on player types but I see the strategy. And it's what I've wanted for years. Just get a stack of mids, have them every where. Our VFL side will genuine midfielders getting 20-25 touches and pushing for spots. Not flankers trying to become mids.

This.

Particularly agree on Short, he's no long shot

I could see Short playing as a small forward in 2015. Zipping around the flanks, delivering inside 50. It's something we haven't had, since, I dunno.

You watch Evo-ready, it's the draft all us old campaigners have wanted for years.

What odds it flops completely? ;D

hehe, who knows

At least we have got the process right for once.

We've given ourselves every chance it will succeed. Thats all onecan ask.

Biggest thing that I think has been overlooked at the draft is the salary cap repercussions.

This influx of youth comes cheap. Base Wage for a first rounder is 70k plus match payments and it filters down to Reece McKenzie who might be getting a base of 60k. The rookies all get 55k. With Jackson, King and Aaron Edwards going you more than likely have 800k, check in BOH and Helbig and it's around 1.1 free. Pencil in the increases of those that stayed and it leaves more than half of that free. Plus 250k of salary goes from the cap for Newman and Brett Deledio and you have around 1m floating.

The cap in 2015 will be a smudge over $10 mill. You must pay 95% or 9.5 million. I'd suggest that with this draft, we would be paying bang on or slight over that 95%.

For what youth can offer on the ground, it's greatest advantage for contending clubs is the cost.

$360k if when you include Foley who is also a veteran in 2015.

We have been here before recently, twice and with pretty mixed, even disappointing results.

We invested heavily in the draft in both 2009 and 2011. Our first few picks in 2009 were solid, Martin, Griffiths, Astbury, Dea, Troy Taylor, Grimes. The state league players in Nason, Webberley and Relton Roberts were all the wrong types, with no track record of second tier success. If we are going to recruit this way, why look at reserves players and bush leaguers?

The kids taken late, Hicks, Contin and Westhoff all came and went pretty quickly. Did they play at the championships, or at least missed them through injury? Maybe they had AFL traits, maybe they didn't but none of them had a reasonable set of actual achievements.

We went again in 2011, Ellis, Elton, Arnot, O'hanlon, Darrou, Verrier, Turner and Wright. Again, in and out quickly, esp the later picks.

It doesn't augur well, unless, of course, we have finally picked up some of the right types. How many of our new recruits played in the U18 champs or dominated at TAC level? They seem to be a group with more achievements that can be measured.
