thoughts on the draft

We drafted well according to most on BF.

Many have us in the top 4 drafting teams this year.

Ellis described as a Simon Black with a better kick. I would be pretty happy with that.

Menadue a great pick up at 33 and wouldn't have lasted much longer. Exactly a type we need.

2 other clubs were interested in Drummond.

Mckenzie raw but could be a real surprise packet. At worse we have a stay at home full forward in our VFL team for the next few years. Will be given every opportunity to make it.

Speed upstairs is way more important than speed in the legs. It's almost compensatory.
Except if your chasing Matty White along the wing, and half forward and into the pocket
Then leg speed kills ya

Anyone see if any AFL experienced players were drafted?
Pretty certain they were left for the PSD or Rookie Draft. Can't recall seeing or hearing about anyone getting a second opportunity.

I'm sorry I didn't read you post correctly, I find it hard to read "meaningless dribble".

Of course there will be players that improve but there will also be players who go backwards or get injuried. Overall team improvement at a significantly faster rate than other teams is what will win a flag, for me the probability of this occurring is low when there is little change and there is not enough elite talent already on the list.
it's your opinion. All I have said is that we have scope for improvement in a number of players, difficult concept I know.

thanks for the apology, I appreciate it

Speed upstairs wouldn't have let White get into that position. ;)

I don't think many seem to realize the massive step that is required to move from 8th to top 4, in my opinion is it a bigger & harder step than from 16th to 8th.

We finished 5th last year and missed the 4 by half a game. I don't think we're far from it, we should be fighting for the 4 at this stage and need improvements from our younger players to be a part of it. This is the time we must now press.

Don't get the angst. On paper best overall haul for years. Five picks instead of three. No re-treads. No short sightedness. Staggered a player of McKenzie's attributes lasted until the 70's.

Would ve prefered a few others over Ellis but apart from that think it is our best draft in years as well, dude.

I think our needs were addressed quite well.

We need the player types that we selected, let's hope we selected the right players.

Having5 picks instead of 3 (2 of which were overage last year) can only be a good thing and improve your chances of finding more than just 1 player (typically from our first round)

Next year we have the real possibility that the following senior listed players won't be at Richmond :

With some it will depend how they go in 2015 of course however Newman will retire and Foley may as well.

- Dea
- Batchelor
- Newman
- Foley
- Knights
- McIntosh
- Elton

And the following rookies may be let go :

Arnot
Thomas

Would open up spots for our targeted Free Agent as well as a number of potential draftees in what has been touted as a midfielders draft in 2015.

Guess somebody doesn't rate the fact we just gave him a two year extension a few weeks ago.
Also notice Axle doesn't turn thirty till the end of next year, so may still have another season or two in him if the achilles holds together properly. Missed a bit of footy over the years so the rest of his body should have a few extra miles left to run.

Pick 12 isn't just 'one extra pick' as you well know.

Pick 12 could bring 250 games of speed and skill.

Drummond and Butler? They might make it. Based on previous years Menadue will be the only one. In a couple of years.

I really rate Corey Ellis, but let's not pretend we prioritised speed as a matter of urgency.

And lets not make up a story to say we didn't when all the sprint numbers for these boys say we did.

Its a tough one im happy with our haul, my preference for pic 12 was Ahern or Duggan but both gone by our pic, Weller wouldve added another pacy player @ pic 12 so it remains to be seen how he progresses but not dis-happy with the Ellis pic think he will surprise many....
In Ellis i see the balance and class of Pendlebury even a Simon black, makes the right decisions and his kicking looks first class....

The next 3 pics are all super quick players with that run & carry mindset, cant have enough of them invaluable!!!
Menadue and drummond (still up in the air whether we shouldve grabbed Gore at 52) but gotta say drummonds highlight reel is quite impressive....Butler like the above 2 mentioned has explosive speed and applies pressure...

McKenzie wow this kid can really take a mark has vice like hands, extremely quick on the lead....

Funnily enough mates of mine are saying you guys did really well addressed some needs with pace, a small fwd and a power forward where some of our own supporters are a little skeptical....Time will tell but i have faith in the choices the club made, welcome aboard to all our newest recruits, hoping for a long career at punt road :clap

On a final note not fussed if they play 2nds whole year lets develope these guys physically & mentally before debuting.....

yeah we did address some needed run and pace with 3 of our picks and hopefully the recruiters were looking at all other attributes instead of just pace.

Taylor Hunt addresses some of the need for speed. Some of the youngsters taken this week might surprise and play some senior footy in 2015, with Drummond looking the most likely at this stage. Certainly, both he and Butler look about right body wise. If Hoskin-Elliott could play senior footy two years ago, there is no reason why Menadue can't play a few games next year.

It is now time to turn our attention to the rookie draft. Assuming we rookie Arnott, we will have 11 on the list who are under 21 and start the season with less than 10 Senior games under their belt. I'd like to see a couple of seasoned State Leaguers like Panos or Shane Nelson taken on the rookie list to help with depth. Gordon and Lloyd were very handy pickups last year, let's do that again.

The way i see it as others have mentioned we filled needs with reasonably good players but time will tell how good they are
We still have a few holes in the list that need to be adressed imo
KPD - Swingman if you wish that can develop for 2-3 years to replace Chaplin (Tyler Keitel would be a good selection)
Ruckman - Rookie Ruckman maybe even 20-21 yo that can play VFL 1-2 years and we can look at life after Maric if he goes down, Hampson is not the answer
Big Bodied Inside mid 188-191cm Brute that is a work horse (Tucky type best way to describe it i suppose and flick off Thomas)

Just watched his highlights again and don't understand how Laverde lasted to pick 20. Anyone have an idea?

I hate that Essendon picked this bloke up.
