Agree but how hard is it to hit a target? Our ratio of hitting targets was terrible.

If I had a dollar for every time we landed a pass 1-2 metres in front of our teammates, I'd be retired at age 21.

Every pass bounces, meaning we have to stop, gather the thing and then either try and evade an opponent, or the next possesion will again be under pressure.

Geelong move the ball from one end to the other hitting each other on the chest and being able to keep it moving.

Spot on and this is why being a foward ala Richo gets so frustrated, however we are only 1 game into the 110 game plan lets see how we are travelling 70 games in and try to be patient for now (no matter how hard it is)

My view on the game.

After a shared first quarter, Geelong were able to move the ball too easily too often when getting possession into their forward 50. Possession to Geelong usually came after poor disposal, kicking to a contest, getting caught or getting chased. Geelong were then able to sweep the ball forward with plenty of players supporting the ball carrier or making themselves available, something Richmond did NOT do well. Ling, Bartel, Champman and Kelly all enjoyed freedom they never should have been allowed. This meant the pressure on the defense was immense as the ball kept on coming to them.

So what do I think can be done better? Be smarter when we have the ball and support the ball carrier by giving *good* options. Moving the ball quickly in the first quarter allowed us to have a decent crack at the goals but Geelong showed that by slowing Richmond's forward movement, we often made poor decisions. Another thing that I always like to see is manning up and chasing.

Still, it's the first game of the season and I really liked to look of a couple of the younger players. Tuck, Newman, Delidio and even Pettifer showed they could be more than useful. Cogs also had a useful run but he's had better games.

Ladder from AFL.com

Cant beleive it...

That's one of the advantages of a high scoring game. Port for example lost by 35, we lost by 62. Our % is better purely because of our higher score.

One of the few plus's out of a miserable day.

I'm going to bed believing we'll be in the black by next week, DG.

Geelong-

Heathens, hilbillies and hamster-humpers all. ;D

In the black! :o :o

I'd settle for A WIN, ANY WIN at this stage Dyer'ere. Even if its by 1 point!!

Concerns from today

Rucks - We could't get first use of the ball out of the centre.
Disposal - Can find better quality disposals in under 10 competitions. Don't want to single out players, cause most of them sucked.
Inability to hand pressure - Poor decision making (Eg Richo handballing backwards to a stationary tiger in front of the geelong goals, someone (can't remember who) running out of the back pocket to the southern stand side, with no teammates with him - eventually getting chased down and kicking the ball to no one, kicking short after a behind then starting a chain of handballs....
Handball - too much handball. Even one of the goals we kicked was almost stuffed up by a poor handball (*cough* Campbell *cough cough*). Luckily no Geelongs players were close enough to tackle the recipient.
Too many passengers watching. I don't think any richmond players could tell you what *any* of the geelong players faces looked like, but they could certainly say what their ass looked like fading into the distance.

Positives
*smile*
Delidio
It's only round one and we'll still see lots of improvement by the time the seasons out.

I don't think we can be too harsh on the backline though. Some guys just simply shouldn't have been played there. Also consider that the midfield today was VFL just simply appalling. If you get the ball forward as often as Geelong could today - it's going to break open the dam walls eventually.

Things will get better, they have to and I don't believe for a second TW will let this sit for long.

They should have to watch the match over a few times just to see how pathetic it really was.
It should make them want to perform better as a team and that is what we want to happen.

They will get better, we just have to be a little more patient ::) :P .

I don't see how they're going to get any better at the game plan when even after the game the vice captain says that they didn't follow it!

I had to leave at 3 qtr time to ensure my wife and nephew didn't decide to start barracking for Geelong just to spite me for buying them RFC memberships.

I'm not going to bag the players ( though not many of them looked up to afl standard today ) or coach I'm just going to say that I was very bored after tyhe 1st quarter.

The big plus for me is that the thrashing came up early and now these people will have no misconception about wear they are at and wear they need to be in comparison to a good side like geelong.

The only way is up.

If TW shut his mouth about Ottens, we would've had a chance. :-\

im happy for terry to continue to talk it up, even if his cattle can't yet walk the walk.

it shows pride and confidence in your stocks which is what we need now not the cowering joke of previous hierachies.

Deja Who?

2 differences than last year:

1. We got beaten by nearly double the margin...now that's saying something

2. Last year, we followed up Geelong with a game against Hawthorn...big difference to Saints, Eagles and Lions.

The Tigers were very slow disposing the ball and were continually out tackled. It looked like there was an additional half dozen Bulldog players on the ground. I agree with the other posters who commented that many of our players seem to lack football smarts. Bit of a waorry.
