THURSFIELD, MCGUANE, MOORE - backbone to our defence for the next 6 yrs

Having raines back next year will certainly add to the depth of the backline, especially if his development continues to improve

structurally the backline is screaming out for a big body with toughness.
as i have said if i was going into a season i would like to go into it with a hurley at fb rance at chb thursfield as a third tall option moore running of a flank with mcguane a depth player. its my opinion for depth and injury coverage and to have an ordered succesion structure in place you need one more on top of these.
kel moore played another great game today in a kp. he is doing a fine job and is making a case to be left as a kpp but i would still develop another bigger kp and free him up a bit.. to me the back half is only partially built.
I have to agree but i think getting a key forward should be higher on the to do list than another key backman. We have no key forwards at all under 30. Schulz just wont make it there, Hughes has a LONG way to go if he is even with us next year and Riewoldt is a HF.

yep the polak schulz hughes situation does not look good. but i disagree on jack i reckon he will make a damn good kpp in time. people forget hes 19 turns 20 next month i think and has and will put on another 7 -10 kg by the time hes 23. h at 192 cm he may even eke out another cm or two especially if his old man is anything to go by.

Rance can come in and hold another tall but do we need that or do we also need to close down a smaller forward like Milne & Welsh? I only remember medium or small forwards giving it to us this year.

We need both. Thursfield, Moore, McGuane and Rance can all play on smaller forwards aswell but it would be good to have a defender who can actually shut them down. Milne and Jones and whoever else i forgot all kicked bags on us this year and McMahon, King or Newman had no chance of stopping them. In fairness to King he did play on Milne with a broken wrist but i get the feeling we have seen the last of Kingy anyway.

I think Rance will be your guy.

The thing I like about these three is that they are learning quickly and are starting to show the signs of experience. They team well, work hard and are improving week after week. With a big body such as Schulz down their they look quite accomplished and will form a very fine defensive group. Throw Rance into the mix and things will look really good in a year or two

If we structure up a bit it may free Moore to play that tall zoning HBF role (Ben Hart, anyone?).

And then when a bloke like Milne is chopping up your smalls in the air you just lob a 6'3" on him who can keep up for pace and it's all over.

The bloke who goes when Rance comes in is Jay, IMO. So let's punt him now. He has currency.

Hopefully our backline will look something like this for next year, with 6 or 7 players rotating through depending on whether or not we need Bowden.

B: Newman Thursfield McGuane

HB: Rance Moore Raines/Bowden

This way McMuffin is either out of the side or on a wing where he should be, considering he has 0 defensive skills.
