Tiger Cult Heroes

1973/74, Robbie McGhie - the tattoed skinhead.

A symbol of Tiger toughness.

Robbie McGhie
and
Neil Balme
and that other left foot key forward from the 70's whose name escapes me but he was as scary as they come.

"Butch" Edwards was a bit of a cult hero before he went to the Pies.

Like the call on Robbie McGhee, he was a scary looking dude even from the stands. Same with Birdman Evans. I remember a goal he kicked after the siren at half time (or maybe 3/4) with a big torp from 60 metres out. Fantastic!

Ricky McLean (despite being from Carlton) was a bit of cult here in the square too.

David Honybun :rofl
I still remember the game against the Swans at the MCG where in the first half,he could'nt get near it & when he did, he'd fall over & take about 2 minutes to get back up again (I know he had major issues with his back). Then in the second half, he came out & played a blinder! Talk about a game of contrasts.

Andy Goodwin for mine though - I loved that ressies GF he played for Melbourne & he just went out swinging. :hihi

Woosha and Robbie Mcghie definitely.

I loved it when Woosha kicked the ball and all the Tiger supporters yelled out "woosha". Has there been anyone else since then that has had that "honour" in the yellow and black? Is there anyone in our current group that would be deserving of it?

Robbie Mcghie looked like he belonged in a boxing tent in the bush. He probably would have done alright as well.

Paul Bullus was and still is up there with the very best of cult heroes the club has ever produced IMO. Some of you might have realised that I have extra fond memories of his classic battles with Stewart Loewe. Boy did I love watching the Bully frighten the living daylights out of 'Buckets'. He even did it in a state game too and should have won the Fos Wiliams medal for BOG but tragically did not.

Some of the stories of his off field exploits only added fuel to the fire of the legend that was Bullus. I wonder what he's doing now. Anyone know?
).K,taraba,I can help you there.I think Paul was running a nightclub and gigging around Melbourne the last I heard.Im good friends with paul,s sister and her main manHad the pleasure of attending the gabba in 1995 to watch the tigers play the BRISPAIN LIARS......
Perfect day i had in the company of Paul,s father, and family from a corporate box.....fantastic weather, and food, all the refreshments you could never need....one problem.....the tigers lost by 71 points....ah well....
Also,Paul,s a great drummer Im happy to tellya for free........I loveed the way he played, really tried hard, and never shirked an issue..remember him giving gary hocking what for in a game against Geelong...and sorting out stuey lowe a couple of times....
and what about that game against freo where he gave away a 50 metre penalty at the death which resulted in a goalto the shockers, then got the ball back and camly slotted it through from 55 out...pure theatre it was...... definitely a popular boy at the time...
other cult heros?
Jumping Jimmy Jess

I'm an unashamed Francis Bourke idoliser. Tough, uncompromising and tiger thru and thru. Closely followed by the Hungry one, still have visions of him about to be tackled only to throw the sherrin out in front of himself, arms extended sideways pleading with the ump, another defender suckered in. Aaahh, memories. Scotty Turner, hard worker and tough as nails, never shirked an issue.

Benny Gale, definitely.

David Honybun's back was so bad he made the trip to Geelong lying down in the back of Benny's Kingswood station wagon.

Mate of mine who was in the cheer squad in the late 80s describes Laffy as his "inexplicable favourite". Signed jumper and everything.

since i've been following the game:

Jim Jess
Richo (obviously)
Scott Turner (if there was a poll i'd vote for scotty, loved him)
Jeff Hogg after kicking 10 on the maggies.
Benny and Michael Gale, butchies.
Michael Mitchell, for sure.
Greg Dear, loved it when he ran with the ball.
Stu Maxfield (peaked at a time when RFC had quite a few 'rockstar' lookalike players like Bulluss, M Gale, Daffy, Campbell, Richo and Howat)

a few overnight heroes like Plapp, Evans, Jurica, Robbie Powell and Justin Murphy :rofl

HA, good one Nitro. I can see Bully rocking out behind the drum kit. I really can. Thanks for the update :)

He was a real character, one of my all time favourites. And I reckon that whilst sometimes he might have looked a bit clumsy he was generally quite effective. Good point you make about how hard the guy tried every week. He really did bust his guts didn't he?

The Buddha Hocking affront was funny but I reckon the Freo incident was something you could define his career by. You know like I said, you sort of got the total package with Bully. While he might have stuffed up every now and again you just knew he would be doing everything to make up for his mistakes.

Does he play in a band or anything right now?

Didn't Mark 'Jacko' Jackson play for us in the reserves ? There's a cult figure if ever I saw one, albeit only a short time with the Tiges.

I still have fond memories of the day we played Essendon and Pretty Boy Lloyd was going well until half time when they switched Paul Bulluss onto him. Wonderful to see Lloydy flinching every time the ball went near him, because knew that he was gonna get a whack from Bully if he tried to mark it. I know it's well before most people's time here, but my Dad's favourite 'cult hero' was Don 'Mopsy' Fraser.

:bash :bash :bash

"Dandy" Andy Goodwin - loved the bloke. Not overly blessed with skill, but more than made up for it with guts and passion.

Saw him singlehandedly (with some help from the Flea) take on the whole Essendon side out at Windy Hill in the late 80's. So much for the rest of the whimps that were supossedly his team mates.

Loved the bloke  :bash :bash :bash

I remember we played Carlton once and Sticks had 6 by halftime. When Andy lined up on him in the 3rd quarter the guys in LO's commentary box actually laughed. Andy held Kernahan and we went on to win the game!
