Last night, care of PRE, I had the fortune to be able to attend the Tiger Supporters / Players Locker Room Function.
There was a good crowd to a stand up, finger food & drinks gathering in the gym at Punt Road. Had a few minutes before the function to share a few words with Greg Miller before the bulk of the crowd arrived.
1. He was very disappointed, like the rest of us, with the result of the Carlton game. Agrees that we lost it in the midfield and shares our view on where the recruiting emphasis will be come end of year.
2. Graham Polak is progressing slowly. Each time he wakes up he shows a new element in his recovery. Needs quiet time as too much attention from others can hinder his recovery. All good things need time.
3. The Pre-draft night is a definite goer. Greg is looking forward to rubbing Cotchin into the face of all those who had doubts about him.
Anyway that's when the gym started filling up with people so the attention went towards the function itself.
It was good the see a few new faces, also some not so regularly seen PREnders and, of course, the regular faces, especially amongst all the lovely ladies.
BTW, before I forget, I saw a few framed pictures, CC, of you with one or two of the Tiger boys that you need to pick up from the club.
The boys who presented themselves at the function were Alex Rance, ......., gee I must be getting old or just tired, someone else can fill in the blanks.
The one thing I picked up from Rance is that he is disappointed with the speed of his development.
He was given the indication that he was in almost certain contention for an AFL debut then was later told that he had missed out and as a consequence let his disappointment translate into a poor VFL performance. He hopes to rectify that and put himself back into contention for an AFL debut.
Ah yep, Dean Polo was there too. sure there were others.
Anyway, I scratched my head at Rance's words and thought that I could clearly understand his situation. Messages of contingent reward, ie reward for performance, need to be very clear and understood, especially by young minds that tend to err on the side of literality, if that's the correct word. Reward for performance relies on basic trust. "I perform you reward me." If the carrot is offered then taken away, it breaks trust and that's when a youngster's efforts & performances can decline accordingly. If the carrot is offered, it must be given, if earned.
Anyway, about this time Graham Polak's brother, and a few other family members arrived to be taken by Greg to the doggies at Sandown. Yep, Greg never seems to stop. The RFC seems to be doing their very best for the Polak family & Graham.
There must be a queue of ex-Tigers who must be left scratching their heads over the attention the club is giving the Polak family.
Times have changed at the RFC. For the better.
I'm sure there's much more to tell.
Time to give someone else a go.
