The explanation on Wikipedia is entirely unsatisfactory. In a four-team competition due to war, Fitzroy finished last after the home-and-away rounds, but with all four teams nonetheless advancing to the finals, Fitzroy wound up winning the flag, thus becoming the only team to be premiers and wooden spooners in the same season.
