Here come the Tigerettes ... Richmond’s answer to the Bluebirds. Their official uniform has yet to be completed.
Tiges with the vibes ...
Carlton has its Bluebirds and soon it might be Richmond and the Tigerettes.
A group of 12 girls - average age 19 - will go through a specially designed routine at the Richmond Punt Road ground tomorrow night.
If the Richmond hierarchy - and don’t leave out the players - give the girls their gongs, the Tigerettes could soon be doing a bit of high kicking at Richmond games.
Richmond general manager Richard Doggett said today, “It sounds very exciting.
“If we like what we see tomorrow then we will make moves to have the girls perform at Saturday’s big match against North Melbourne at the MCG.”
The proposal to launch the Tigerettes was put to Richmond yesterday and immediately Mr Doggett started contacting members of the club’s finance committee.
Mr Glen Jonson, the manager of Private Stock Publicity, a Caulfield publicity company, said he had 96 girls in training for a Bluebirds-like act.
This was apart from the 12 chosen to perform for the Tigers.
Mr Doggett said if Richmond did go ahead with the Tigerettes it would not cost the club money.
He said a sponsor was being found for them.
A larger crowd than normal is expected at Richmond’s training session tomorrow night. And they won’t all be turning up to watch Michael Roach, Kevin Bartlett and the other Tiger heroes.
The trainer of the Tigerettes, Julie Payne, said she was not concerned about the rough treatment the Bluebirds received from young spectators at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Sunday.
Her smiling comment was: “That doesn’t worry us - the Tigers are tougher.” [The Herald 1980] Source heraldsunphoto_retro.
