Isn't this a headline we would love to read in the Sunday paper!

The best teams traditionally have about 8-10 guys averaging 3 tackles or more per game. In the side playing the Bumbers we only have 2 hitting this mark, Kane Johnson and Tambling. Interesting to see we dropped McGuane, the only other guy averaging 3 tackles per game. Essendon's midfield is not skilled or experienced enough to beat pressure (as shown by the blowouts against good tackling teams) but if we don't tackle them then there skills are pretty good (as shown by their ability to kick high scores). So it's quite simple, if the Tiges lay at least 50 tackles against the Bummers (8 above average) we win comfortably because of our ability to win the hard ball.

FYI: For those who think only guys 2nd to the ball have high tackle rates I've listed the Top 25 tacklers in the league below this season (minimum 3 games) and each players average disposals in brackets next to their tackle average. There are number of guys I call "twenty four hour" players on the list. These are "two-way players" who average at least 20 possies and 4 tackles per game. I call them "twenty four hour" players cos' to get these stats you gotta be able to run all day long in both directions. I consider them equivalent to basketballers who get double-doubles. You gotta have them in your lineup or you lose more often than not. We have 1...... Captain Kane.

1 Adam Bentick Carlton 7.8 ( 17.8 )
2 Lenny Hayes St Kilda 7.5 ( 23.8 )
3 Luke Ball St Kilda 6.2 ( 20.8 )
3 Domenic Cassisi 6.2 ( 21.4 )
5 Luke Power Brisbane 6.0 ( 22.9 )
5 Scott Burns Collingwood 6.0 ( 18.8 )
7 Brett Kirk Sydney 5.9 ( 21.0 )
8 Jude Bolton Sydney 5.8 ( 16.5 )
8 James McDonald Melbourne 5.8 ( 18.5 )
10 James Bartel Geelong 5.6 ( 25.7 )
11 Tyson Stenglein West Coast 5.5 ( 16.9 )
11 Nigel Lappin Brisbane 5.5 ( 18.5 )
11 Matthew Priddis West Coast 5.5 ( 27.0 )
14 Daniel Cross Western Bulldogs 5.2 ( 26.1 )
14 Kieran Jack Sydney 5.2 ( 12.5 )
16 James Kelly Geelong 5.2 ( 22.0 )
17 Joel Corey Geelong 5.0 ( 29.0 )
17 Luke Hodge Hawthorn 5.0 ( 20.8 )
19 Michael Rischitelli Brisbane 4.9 ( 15.1 )
19 Brad Sewell Hawthorn 4.9 ( 25.1 )
21 Gary Jnr Ablett Geelong 4.8 ( 27.4 )
22 Andrew Swallow North Melbourne 4.7 ( 13.7 )
23 Shaun Burgoyne Port Adelaide 4.6 ( 19.9 )
23 Ryan Crowley Fremantle 4.6 ( 12.9 )
23 Scott Thompson Adelaide 4.6 ( 24.8 )

Best Placed Tigers:
35 Kane Johnson Richmond 4.3 ( 27.7 )
78 Richard Tambling Richmond 3.4 ( 17.0 )

No one else in Top 100 and only 4 in Top 200.

Being a 20-4 player (Average 20 possies / 4 tackles per game) is one of the key areas that Foley, Deliedio, Tambling, Tuck and any new guys that want to play midfield had better address or it will continue to be difficult to beat the teams in the 8.

I've always been bemused by TW's complete lack of focus on tackling when a) he's seems a pretty astute coach and b) virtually every genuine premiership contender over the past 10 years has been a great tackling side. A crap Collingwood team almost stole a flag on tackling & pressure alone.

You cant blame the age of the list as TW had mature Bulldog sides that were not great tackling teams even with the presence of one of the all time great exponents Tony Libratore on board at the time.

:o We're looking for "20-4" players not "5-5". And hopefully we stop trading for "Black-Jack" players; that is guys like McMahon who play "Twenty-One".

When Tambling was on KBs show earlier this week he said Wallace did have an emphasis on tackling. It doesn't look like players have been really judged on that before this year though, maybe because Wallace was waiting for younger bodies to mature.

Great post Juffa.

Whilst Wallace has attempted to place extra emphasis on tackling this season by dropping players who fail to do the hard yards off the ball it doesn't appear to be working all that much.
After 8 games this year we are still coming dead last in this area(by some distance), this despite being in Terry's 4th season and with bodies now maturing.

Still at least Terry is finally recognising the problem and attempting to rectify it and it's a big reason 'one way Kayne' is are finding himself floundering at Coburg.

Here is the complete list of Richmond tacklers after 8 rounds.

Those which regularly don't tackle anywhere near enough for my liking in this side are Richardson, Thursfield, Hyde, Polak, Deledio, Bowden & Brown. Some of those guys are our supposed guns but relative to others in the competition their tackling rates are nothing short of pathetic.

Agree 100% - Richo and others need to improve. Tackling is an important skill, not simply requiring endeavour and concentration. There is certainly a technique to not being sold the dummy (for example - it is easier to tackle Tivendale than Dale Thomas). Not sure how easy it is to teach a player this skill. We have used Rugby players and I think it is more than just watching the players hips.

Tackles are one of those statistics that dosnt really justify anything.

Our low tackle count is due to the fact we are 1st in the comp for contested possesions. Its hard to tackle when your're first to the ball.

didn`t that all change about a month ago?

i thought that`s one of the main reasons why we`ve turned a corner because tackling has finally become a huge priority.
and i thought there is some kind of rule now if you don`t lay at least one tackle you are almost certainly dropped.
wasn`t that why bowden was dropped, because of lack of intensity, tacklng etc.

i`d like to see the tackle counts over the last month or so.

Mega gang tackling under Swoopers coaching got a very average side to a prelim.
Even Spudley tried to get the boys doing the hard yards and tackle.
Playing at AFL level you can gaurantee that if you don't put a truckload of physical pressure ( tackle ) on the ball carrier he will take his time and pick the arse out of whatever target he wants.
This has been the weakest area of our game in recent years and biggest flaw in Ploughs coaching.
Sides like Brisbane, Geelong and Scumwood thrive on the hard contested work of which tackling is a core ingredient.
Put the opposition under the pump, force him to stuff up the position and rebound at a hundred miles an hour straight back down the ground. Not sideways and ring a round a rosy.

Finished with 64 tackles. Much improved effort seeing we had the ball 127 more times than the bumbers. It goes to show you can still out tackle teams even when have much more of the ball.

Brilliant all round game from Foley and nice to see Jake King laying 8 tackles. With his physique, speed and low centre of gravity he should be a tackling machine like Libba was.

White tackled well also tonight.

Tackles against the bombers;

Foley, King 8
White 6
McMahon, Brown, Moore 4
Tuck, Johnson, Pettifer, Deledio, Tambling, Hyde 3
Edwards, Newman, Riewoldt, Simmonds, Thursfield 2

Thats 6 players who landed 4 or more tackles. If 4 of the 6 players who landed 3 tackles tonight could manage 1 more, we'd reach that target of 10 players with 4+ tackles a game.
