Tigers to return to Punt Road

I realise you are phrasing a hypothetical and possibly making a point, mate, so not having a go at you :hihi....but the mere thought of such....sacrilege. >:(

Sorry Dyer, point taken.
Perhaps I should have phrased the hyperthetical question that, if Richmond had instead been run for the last ten years by the Collingwood board and employees, how would Punt road look and operate now?

I'm with you mate, it's a good point.

Though I do believe, love or hate him, Eddie McGuire has done massive things for CFC. Collingwood would be possibly extinct or in as bad/worse a mess as we are in if he had not been a Collingwood man. Doesn't change your point, I'm just saying, doesn't take much to turn things around.

Now where is our Eddie McGuire? :hihi

Exactly Dyere.
And I really believe this has an impact on the culture of the club, including onfield.
Richmond seem to wait for something to happen, perhaps assuming that the 'sleeping giant' will one day definately awake, whilst other clubs go out and make it happen.

Despite some member backlash, Collingwood left Vic Park without a backward glance, and are much the stonger for it.
Richmond has had access to Punt Road for years, with a huge supporter base, and seem to be treading water .....if not going backwards

Put Punt Road - the road itself - underground from Swan St to Bridge Road.

Poppa, Punt Road needs to be given a second level, not put under ground.

WORST Road in Melbourne!!

As a co-tentant dont we get a good deal for our MCG games? If we dont then that sucks but I always thought cause we are the co-tenant we are looked after.

Punt road would be a problem because you wont be able to play a game at the g and at punt road on the same day. Imagine cars going in for the night game at the g and others coming out for the day gaem at punt road, its already busy. the cost to get it all done up would be heaps, but if it would happen that would be a dream!! We would get awsome return for the dollar.

But the obvious place is princes park. Its a little fix up, parking and travel are issues but there are plenty of tram stops and driving to the ground isnt hard at all you can bypass the cbd.

As for a new AFL venue if its not carlton or richmond, then dont build it in a suburb where the city isnt visible with the naked eye because then it is obviously too far for most...like casey, no one wants to go for a 2 hour drive to get to a game!

Slightly off topic

I have always wondered if Collingwood owned Punt Road, how it would look and operate now?

At the very least, I could never understand why Richmond does have a plan to cater for the thousands of spectators who walk past
at the end of each and every game there (not just Richmond games) every week.

I can't help thinking about the lost revenue.

Some interesting thoughts.

Collingwod had Victoria Park, and look at it now.
Mind you, we all know Vic Park is in a *smile* position.

I've spoken previously about the Kardinia Park complex.
Sensational, something the Tiges can aspire too.

If any of you get chance, have a look at Windy Hill now.
What they've done there now is quite remarkable.
Worth a look.

I'm afraid punt road oval as an option will just be a pipe dream.

Princess Park is the option, and most viable one.
That said, i do not like the fact Carlton will get $$ out of the games.
If it was run and owned (lease controlled) by AFL as a neutral venue, i am all for it.
(Carlton Social Club can still be there).

I am not sure what others think on here, but maybe we should offload these two games to Tassie or a revamped country ground in Victoria (like in a city the size of Ballarat, Bendigo or Shep)?

Where is the best country ground? It would need to have a magnificent surface and a large capacity and stands and terraces. The rooms and facilities for players and all the hangers on would have to be first rate too.

Pretty sure Punt Road was in existance when they built Docklands Fighting Fury?
was talking about the new stadium at Olympic Park. Someone suggested using it for afl games...can't happen until the docklands deal finishes.
Punt rd is too small. Will never happen.

Well there are a few grounds with Afl standard surfaces. My understanding is that venues that have held Nab challenge cup matches had to have surfaces that complied to afl standard in order to host. Most of the country matches generally get around the 10k mark for the crowd (Although there is usually alot of standing specs to get the crowd figure that high).

If 2 Melbourne based teams transferred their two extra matches to the venue (4 games), it maybe viable for a nice little upgrade.

If the afl went down that path, they should work with the local league as well, so they can get a $$$ injection.

Went to Morwell a few years back to see us play Essendon.
Good size ground and excellent surface.
ATM it would hold about 12,000 people.

If we were to offload the two extra games to Tassie, i would hope we would play them in Hobart.
Maybe link up with the Hobart Tigers? On a side note - glad they have got rid of the lions tag they have had for the last 5 years.

Hey, I could go along with a few games at Morwell. 15 minute drive each way for me.

A few weeks back I wrote on another thread of my plan for Punt Road.
Didn't get a bite, so I'll try again.
Put Punt Road - the road itself - underground from Swan St to Bridge Road.
Make the ground wider by redeveloping the outer wing.
Pinch another 20 metres at the northern end and you finish up with an MCG size ground.
Redevelop the grand stand wing and facilities.
All up cost will be BIG but still LESS than building a brand new stadium.
Also has travel benefits over Princess Park.

This would cost HEAPS more than building a stadium from scratch. Tunnels cost a bit.

Indeed.
But a new stadium will cost mega bucks just for the land.
The tunnel idea I think means free land.
