Tiges vs Power Game Day

What's wrong? Everything.
What needs to fixed? See above.
How long will it be before Richmond has any genuine success? Forever.
We need to cherish milestones like today because they're about the only things we'll get to celebrate for a long time to come.

a few spines were seen left on the ground, couple of hearts too.

There's probably 15k broken hearts left in the stands as well, but the MCG are getting used to cleaning those up when we've been playing.

Coburg doing well, but read in the paper that Krak and Bowden the best players. What are the odds they will be back in the team via the revolving door selection process within a week or two?

When Port were making us look like witches hats today, I did not notice anyone show any leadership to try and stem the tide. The players are selfish kick chasers who do not do the team things, but are happy getting a game. It has been a problem at the club for so long.

While this may offend, Joel Bowden is the epitome of Richmond...looks a million dollars when there is no pressure on, yet when the going gets tough, he is shown up to be a selfish kick chaser who seems to just cruise around not giving two sh!ts about the result. The fact he has won two B&Fs in the last 3 years says a hell of a lot.

Can I start by saying this is my first post!

This website is amazing, and I have been reading it for years and love it! But until now I haven’t added anything.

The last few weeks have really hurt, and it is starting to get to me. Another ten goal loss (well nearly) is bad enough, but the stuff on MMM made it worse.

The revelation that sponsors are preparing to turn their backs on us because of sustained poor performance and subsequent lack of Friday night games. And then there was Miller talking about drafting. I was left with the feeling that he was truly clueless.

This is a hard time – but maybe it will get better. It’s just that after the last 20 odd years it is hard to know when or how?

Sorry for the sombre note – but I have an overwhelming feeling of despair brought on by consistently bad performance…

I hope to contribute more often!

The coach shouldn't be let off lightly in episode 16 of the 2007 RFC farce. Prior to the game during a David King interview, it was said that we would play one-on-one with no loose man behind the ball. So what happened, we played a loose man behind the ball.

Worse still, Port had one of the Burgoyne's as their loose man in our forward line. So as well as crowding Richo's space (especially in the first half), Burgoyne had plenty of the ball all game that he set up perfectly with his excellent foot skills. At no stage was any attempt made to man him up.

In contrast, our loose man did nothing to either prevent Port from scoring 155 points or creating off half back. What was Wallace thinking? He's as much out of form as the players.

The above is in addition to the usual lamant at the pathetic foot skills of the majority of this team, lack of awareness and ability to think clearly and quickly when in position.

We might as well make 5-6 changes and play kids like Hughes, Connors, Petersen, Casserley and so on for the rest of the year. Many that played today are simply not AFL standard and never will be. Goodbye for ever to Hyde, Schulz, Jackson, Howat and Tivendale. Even Raines and Newman were dreadful today.

Surely the coaching staff at the RFC have to provide this unskilled group with a longer crash and bash type game plan rather than the skill based short game that they've tried all season. If you've got decent tall key forwards, why wouldn't you go quickly and long to them more often, especially if you can't short pass effectively?

In defence to Shulz everytime he went for a mark Richo would crash into his back, not good for the confidence when your own team mates get in your way, Richo should be playing chf, that where we are bracking down, Shulz and Riewoldt forward 50.

Some observations from yesterdays game:

Port obviously exposed Richmond's defence very well yesterday. Our focus was Tredrea & the new kid (rising star), but Motlop and Ebert were sensational. On most occassions, they were always one out with plenty of space in the forward line. Like I've mentioned previously (see St Kilda match thread), teams are aware the Tigers like to get plenty of run from players like Raines & King. By making them more accountable towards there opponents, they play like taggers more than run and carry type defenders. As a result, many of Ports goals/ behinds drifted over the top of smaller forwards/ defenders and rolled through. Thurstfield & McGuane got better as the game went on. And along with Polak, the three talls did OK.

Richmond got smashed in the midfield. It's an understatement. Without looking at the stats sheet, Ports pace and clean disposal around the ground was clearly evident.

Our forward line was dysfunctional in the first half. On too many occassions, we played from behind. In one example, Shultz flew for a mark (2nd in line) and Brown waited at the back of the pack for an easy touch. The result? An easy Port clearance. At other times, we worked the ball well to about the 50m arc. Our players hesitated and messed with the ball, waiting for a decent lead or some space to kick to a leading forward. Jack flew and spoiled Richo in a marking contest. Richo cursed Jack, Jack ran away and chased Port running the ball out of defence. On most occassions when the ball hit the ground after a marking contest, Port cleared easily on most occassions. The Tigers just didn't have the strength or enough pressure to keep it inside F50.

Richmond's field kicking and general skills around the ground were average. There are clear indications the Tigers have a game plan and this is followed on most occassions. But our execution is not up to standard. When we have the ball on centre-wing and we cut across to the middle, it's just not acceptable to put the ball in that vacinity - It must hit the target, because when it lands to the feet or rolls onto a player, the opposition pounce very quickly.

But despite being out played for most of the match, the Tigers did find some positives. Richmnd can work on from another game under JR (4 goals) & Edwards (the ability to get to a contest and create something from nothing). Thustfield, Polak & McGuane will benefit from another run. Shultz had limited oppourtinities - He can kick goals, but needs to get fit over the summer. The Tigers were without Deledio, Tambling & Polo - They are all part of the future. Foley was closely checked all day - The real challenge now begins for Axel.

Most teams often use phrases such as, "they are a good team...we expected a tough match from them...they are not to be taken lightly". In Richmond's case, these words - as difficult as it is to imagine - still apply.
In today's paper, Wallace calls for "big changes", but this is a phrase often used by clubs and supporters when a team is performing poorly. Perhaps if we concentrated reducing our turnovers & skills errors by 25% first, then the next lot of changes would will be much easier to manage.
