PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Yeah, we got belted on Sunday. I was there, I hated it. My kids hated it, I hated that my kids went home deflated and disappointed. Funny how other team's fans at work want to talk about it all day long.

They'll keep.

It happens. Tough selection decisions have been made and they will hurt in the short-term. If Gaspar, PBowden, Tivendale, Krakouer and Kellaway had all played on Sunday, we would have got closer, I have no doubt about that. But so what? Probably still would have lost and that is the point.

Brisbane were regularly belted last year. They even had the ignominy of being belted by Richmond, a rare occurrence if even there was one. They lost repeatedly in front of their home fans too. Port Adelaide struggled all year, as did Carlton, Essendon and the Kangas. Hawthorn started well, finished well but were deplorable in between. It happens.

None of these clubs panicked. Not even Carlton, not even after three spoons in four years.

Things might even continue to go pear-shaped for a lot longer. If the club has to swallow some bitter pills for the longer term good then so be it.

As a Richmond supporter of long standing I feel the hurt and disappointment as much as anyone. I also know that chopping and changing administrators, coaches, players and boot-studders won't get the club anywhere. Been there, done that. It won't work. Twenty-five years of crap is testament to this.

Lets not be so precious about this. If the events of this season show us anything, it is how difficult is truly is for our club to compete with the leaders of the competition.

During the 2004 season, as the inevitable realisation that we had the worst team in the AFL dawned on me, I felt terrible about it because it was an inarguable proposition. That is not the case now. There is a lot to like about the team.

Next year, Deledio, Foley, Tambling, Raines and co will be a little bit bigger and a little bit stronger, McGuane, Hughes and Oakley-Nicholls might be more confident about their roles and some other kids might step up. A few early picks again this year will be a further fillip, as much as I hate losing games to get them.

Sometimes results don't come as quickly as we would like.
