Thought i'd give a brief update on the Tiwi Island Bombers in the NTFL. In case you dont know, a Tiwi Island side is experimenting with seven games in this years NTFL. All the fellas from Tiwi who normally play for other sides (e.g St Marys where I think Bling came from) and Tiwi league teams are playing for the Bombers and then will return to their old teams after rd 7. Dean Rioli plays for the bombers, although rested in the match against the Waratahs today. As far as I can tell, the bombers are ALL aboriginal.
The bombers beat the Waratahs this weekend by 20 odd point in a really great game. The Tiwi island team are UNBELEIVABLY entertaining to watch and I barrack for them almost like the tigers. Their kicking to position is incredible, they can drop a ball, on the run, 50 metres away to a fella sandwiched between defenders, and the ball will often JUST be to the advantage of their teammate. The PICKUP off the ground on the run makes you gasp. Today I think it was Roy Farmer sucking it up at hyper speed, under pressure and bananaing tight angle goals. Roy famer was electric and kicked 3 great goals. Their kicking at goal is outstanding, both set shots (Ethan Tungawuti? kicked 4 straight from some tough set shots) and on the run and under pressure, they use the banana kick often and superbly. It was their kicking for goal that beat the waratahs today, who looked bigger and stronger and often more composed, but the Tiwi boys are just so QUICK and damaging when they go forward. Today they played in really damaging bursts. whenever the waratahs challenged them (they got within about 5 pts i think), the Tiwi boys kicked exciting goals against the run of play.
So in this footy dry spell, between the grand final and the draft, if you get a chance, tune into to darwin ABC or ABC 2 I think at about 8.30 (EDST) on sunday mornings and watch the Tiwi Bombers. They are undefeated in 5/5 after being really challenged this weekend and only have 2 more games to play. The commentators are super excited about them and are already mourning their departure after rd 7. They will surley be a regular team next year???
