Todays Game @ Canberra [MERGED]

Didn't get to read every post but excellent efforts by Craig, Remote & as always CC.

Read the summary in the paper. I was very happy to see that Simon Phillips played a dominant role for the Swans - 3 goals plus in the best players.

Many of you will remember Simon from the 2005 Under 18 Championships. As I recall, he was a local kid from Greg's old club. He played as a genuine "Bartlett-like" goal kicking rover for Vic Metro, but was largely "poo-pooed" by eveyone because he was only 174cm.
I was so hoping that Richmond would pick him up in the rookie draft but that wasn't to be, and the Swans took him with one of their last 3 rookie picks, after everyone else had finished.

Anyway, regardless of the circumstances, it's good to see talented juniors kicking on, regardless of height or weight limitations. Hope young Phillips kicks on further.

It serves as a guide for this 2007 draft - Adam Maric, 178cms. Could be very good as a medium/late pick by the Tiges come November/December.

Thanks for the report, RT. What did Riewoldt do in these passages?

Both times Riewoldt attacked the ball ferociously and left defenders in his wake - then he side stepped two others and delivered the ball to a team mate in far better position. The first time he beat 4 Swans defenders and the second time 3 with balance poise and a deft side step all while keeping a level head and not rushing the delivery.

The second time he did it - the Swans bloke sitting behind me said "who is that number 8, wish we had him"

Both passages of play were over in seconds and it was as if Riewoldt said "Bugger you Swans I'll show you how its done".

Dyer'ere if Jack Riewoldt does those types of plays consistantly during the four quarters of a game and regularly each game he will be up there with best of them. But in saying that I feel he needs experience at the senior level to gain confidence in his own ability - lets give him time - he and we will reap the rewards.

Cheers.....RT

Great to read, Remote, about young JR.

It was that "something special", in my mind, that put him above Thorp.

Ran in to Rob Dalton at the cricket yesterday, he told me that young JR is determined to be in the seniors round 1.

Well, that may or may not be.
But that spirit & entusiasm combined with undoubted natural ability tells me that Tigerland will have "something special" when he does arrive at AFL level.

....nothing to go feral about.

Feral was last week. There's a big contrast in the posts following both games. Funny people got so aggro, delisted half the team, ripped up membership tickets and got rid of the coach and awarded us the wooden spoon all because of a Mickey Mouse loss.

Today has been bliss on the message board. Ahhhhhhh the serenity. ;D

Difference is the Kids today Rosy. Should have played far more of them last week. I reckon TW really wanted to win last week.

Not to mention it was a lesser losing margin than last week and most importantly wasn't televised either which is a pity as i'd rather watch a game with the current rules rather than the bastadised circus rules of the NAB cup.

Absolutely nothing funny about it Rosy. I find this site a good distraction when I need a break and I was deprived of it last week. I hate Richmond loses more because of the reactions of the fans than the loss itself.

Strange that brightsiders are known as ferals when it is so obviously a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Ok this is off the top off my head cos i lost my notes anyhow here goes.

Good post craig, thanks. Nice to have something to work with after reading a review of a game and players. Almost too positive ;) , but I realise you are looking at the positives. When I see a post with a positive bent makes the criticisms contained within so much more believable. Very constructive.

Lets just say no club will be getting Adam Maric with a late draft pick ;D

At the minute would be top 10 material in the 2007 Draft.

That would then suggest to me the Dawks might jib another season just to get another top selection, apologies in advance if I've touched a raw nerve.

Back to Melbourne an a Computer.

First time to Canberra so it was good to get such a good day, great to meet Hutstar an speak to RT an Disco, very impressed with the venue only small but very good.

Just a couple of points I wanted to point out that guys have covered in certain ways.

*Cant believe you couldnt take anything but a possitive out of Tambling's game ,yes he made a couple of mistakes but who dosent,an the dropped mark which was a lead to the pocket which he tried to take in his hands ,was turned into a beautiful bit of play where he swooped back on the ball, dogged his opponent burned along the boundry line an hit the top of the square where Sarge took a blinder.

But the biggest possitive for me was When he filled the hole, lept high an took the ball in his hands as the pack crunched him from behind then got up an delivered the ball well with a 40 metre pass.

*Craigs Boy Will gee he was impressive his abilty to get fist on ball an that amazing closing speed were very evident yesterday.Saw him in a praccy match few weeks ago an he looked like a lot of guys coming back from a reco with a lack of confidence went to ground easy ,but yesterday very exciting

*Sarge Its one thats been up before but gee he plays with a different confidence when his the go to man, down back or forward yesterday I loved his fight when the ball was on the ground an his field kicking was the best on the park, one example was on the wing in front of me an Hutsatr on the wing He got it at half back an kicked a 40 metre pass across his body where Howat didnt have to break stride an this set up another goal.Personally I see Sarge been able to play equally as well either end, just needs an ounce of good luck an some self belief.

*Pato may have not got hands on the ball in the ruck hit outs but his work at ground level an his hard leading at chf was fantastic, dont believe the reports that Everitt was good Pato flogged both ruckman around the ground an it stood out because every time Spider got a touch the Swans would give a big roar,an they were pretty quiet.

*Just one more point for you guys that wernt there the Swans got a few goals from the new rule,Sugar gave away a 50 for saying "where not playin netball"

I hope you are kidding re the netball comment CC, I watched some of the game between the Hawks and Carlton, some of the profanity coming out of the mouths of the players and them not getting 50's, pure hypocrisy!

Not kidding Feisty an it was a very soft decision anyway,Oh he may have said something in between playing an netball though ;D

Thanx CC, RT and Craig, riveting stuff...

On Moore momentai said he beat O'keefe and Craig said Moore was soundly beaten by O'keefe, anyone else care to shed some more light on that duel?

Had a couple of mins to think about it, not important on that duel all in all a very good effort from the youngsters, thats all we want a committed effort.

It's very interesting......2 people can see the same thing yet walk away with totally different perceptions of what they have seen. Eienstein was spot on!

Here is my perspective:

It was very enjoyable watching tha kids play yesterday. The game itself was a very close affair with the swannies experience proving the difference.

Tambling - class above most players on the ground as far as i'm concerned. Sure made some mistakes (as all players did on the day) but nothing to perpetuate the myth. The one additional thing I took away with me is that he is a very stong (one grab) contested mark for his size. He is tracking beautifully at the moment. As i said on another thread...the only problem with Ritchie is that a another (later) draft pick is showing more at this stage.

Howat - well i'm beginning to come round. Gut busting running all day. Lost count of the amt of handball receives he accumulated. Reliable left foot and saw him use his right. The rate of his improvement over the course of a yr has been very good. Just wish that he eliminate the "stop and prop" from his game (he is not the only one). Perhaps the lack of up field targets contribute to this. The again...i always that many options are created by having swarms of runners pushing the ball from the D50 to the F50? Absolute lock in for R1.

Schulz - Had a very good game. Marked well, kicked well moved well, read the play well. Played D50 and F50. His flexibility will be a key for the team in the coming yrs. Turning 22 soon so i hope 07 is his break out yr. Just needs to stay fit and string a few games together.

Meyer - Played OK. Good hands and feet.....would rather he used his feet more than his hands. Its almost as if he does not have the confidence to be the playmaker and so is prepared to dish the ball of ASAP rather than take an opponent on. There was one point in the game (2nd qtr?) where he was coming on to the ground from the interchange bench and was well positioned to receive a kick from a team-mate but didn't give a yelp. It has been said many times before Danny has to DEMAND THE BLOODY thing. He needs to believe that the ball is his. Dare to dream that you can win a game off your own boot son.

Lids - Was only OK. Missed an easy shot at goal that an elite player should nail 99 times out of 100. Do we expect too much of him? He seemed to be spend large chunks of time (particularly in the first half) playing on Goodes. Goodes was BOG in the 1st half. Like Meyer....needs to take players on much more than he is doing IMO!

Jacko - best game i have seen from the lad since his rookie yr. That is not really saying much though cause he has shown nothing in the last couple. Interestingly...played in defense and on Micki O at stages.........hmmmm!

Krak - as clean and skilful as always. Seemed to show more intensity than usual......i wonder what has caused this. Is it a recognition that he is now one of the senior players on the list....or perhaps off field issues? Whatever the reason.....i think it will be good for his footy.

Thursty - Great to see the kid back. It was just pleasing see him get through the game. Hope they ease him into it.....not too much responsibility first up. Perhaps this is the reason Gaspar is still on the list. Don't get too excited people because he still needs at least half a season to well and truly get back into it.

Whitey - Much better than last week. Interrupted pre-season but will get better with each run that he has.

Foley - Good game. Needs flair and skill around him to be damaging. Seems quicker than i remember.....is this due to having a greater fitness base or a greater focus on speed rather than endurance at training? Combination of both? Now belongs.

Jack - Great cameos but needs to work hard....BLOODY hard! Not just in the game.....but on the track. Terry needs to be right on to him.

Edwards - Looks the goods.......but spent a lot of time spectating during the game. Seemed overawed at stages.

Cleve - Has a very large head. Well....not sure if its his head or hair to be honest. Get a hair cut son (sorry i'm starting to get silly). Like Schulz played both D50 and F50. Quality disposal. Does not seem to make any errors or poor decisions. Just needs time as well as fire in the belly.

Harto - Also improved significantly from last week. His kicking seems to have improved (i.e. not as bad as some suggest). His goal was kicked from about 40 mtrs out on a 50 degree angle. We need him in the side.

Collins - Will prove to be very good value if we can add some muscle on his frame. Knows how to get the pill.

Connors - Disappointing.....expected to see him more involved.

JON - Certainly adds something to the side when running off half back. Quick forwards will not be a problem for him. Needs greater core strength and polish with his kicking. There was a point in the game where he and Micky O were 1 on 1 jostling for a high ball just outside the goalsquare. Micky Os greater strength and experience allowed him to take the mark at the last gasp. Good lesson for the kid.

Klingon - Was actually getting a bit of the pill until he got crunched when a swannies player took a nice speccy over him. No really an issue until i realised it was little Phillips. Does that say something about our player or theirs?

Patto - had a very good game. Matched it with both Jolly and Everitt in the ruck and beat them around the ground IMO. Should be give greater responsibility this yr.

Ah Angus - you are a legend. My mates 5 yr old son asked "who is that number 44" as he jogged around the ground. I said "that's Angus". He said "what's in his mouth". I said a "mouth guard to protect is teeth big fella". He responded "i like Angus". The big fella proceeded to snag two nice goals and play a nice game. Still a long way to go. Have we got a ruck coach?

On balance.....a positive outing against a match hardened team that has played in successive grand finals. I reckon the scoreboard difference was just about right.

Brilliant. The kings of tanking might be tempted to go one more season of throwing games to get the all-time record for top 20 picks; which they already have mind you. ;)

GO TIGES!!!

Hmm, Chad Cornes missed a set shot at goal, 5 metres out last night, granted it was wet, but from all reports it was a sitter... isn't he a premiership player?

Edit: I just had a look at the AFL site (now that you can watch some stuff on bogpong even if you are not a subscriber) at the highlights, Cornes missed a beauty, skewed right off his boot... it looked as if it hit both goal posts and went through for a behind (could have been the camera angle though)

Misses happen.

:hihi

I hardly noticed O'Keefe

One burning question. Where is Diggler and his side kick Laff this week.

Last week could get on here quick enough.

On a more serious note, Craigs reports were enough for me. Great reporting Craig, and I know your not one to go over the top with brightness so it is a good indication of where yesterdays game was at. It was great to read some of your reports on the kids. Despite differing views on some kids it was a good read and as someone said some will just see things slightly differently. Good work by all who provided info.

The likes of Connors, Edwards etc doesn't worry me at all. They are babes in the woods and its great that they are getting a bit of game time at this time in their careers. It will show them how hard they have to work to make it at the elite level.

Great to hear Patto worked so hard against a seasoned rucking duo. It will be a good lesson for him and provide him with a bit of confidence as well.

Great to hear some more balanced reporting on Tambling. The young kids are showing us that their is a future at Tigerland and the sky is not falling, just yet.

Good to hear that Will made a successful return and showed quite a bit. Obviously he needs to be eased into it, but good to hear he is showing no signs of lacking confidence in the leg.

This was a very very young and inexperienced side and they will all benefit from the run. No doubt their confidence will grow as they continue to realise they are capable of mixing it with the best. Despit the fact that Sydney played a lot of younger guys they also played a lot of premiership players. Sure some may have been underdone, but overall I think we can be satisfied with the result.

The one that still amazes me is people talking about mistakes and skill errors. It is the second week of the preseason people. People will make mistakes at this time of the season. The skills will get better as the confidence and match hardness increase.

Great effort by the kids and great reporting by the usual suspects.

Craig great to read your report and read that you have taken many positive out of the game. (and that is not meant to make you sound like a darksider) It really heartens me to see that someone who usually pretty hard in his assessments took a lot of positive away from the day.

Claw has finally got his wish ;D

The good thing is that the like of Hartigan, Jackson, Meyer and a few others now know that spots are there for the taking, but they are going to have to work hard to earn them. The ball is now squarely in their court.

Good to see Cam Howat continuing his rise in prominance and showing some of the others how it should be done and what is required. Obviously Andy Collins is an astute judge of character as he was a big push for getting Howat to Tigerland. This kid will no doubt earn and elevation in coming weeks.

Thanks to all who contributed. :clap It made a great read.
