Tom Lonergan loses kidney.

Heard McKenna on the ABC today, both he and Sam lost part of their kidney.
Hope young Tom bounces back in whatever path he chooses to take.

Hasn't this been a rotten year for injuries though?

Newman had part of his kidney removed in 1967 after being tossed into a fence.

It was reported in The Age today that Tom had to have his whole kidney taken out, and he is now in an induced coma.

Get well soon mate, and although it may only end up being 7 games, at least you played at the highest level... well done :clap

Why would he be in a coma?
Good luck to him but that as they say is footy.

I'm no doctor but i'd suggest that its a big change from having two kidneys to filter the blood to one, so they'd put him in the coma to manage him. I know if it were me in that bed and I woke up, i'd be all over the place freaking out, raising my blood pressure, putting stress on organs. The coma will help him rest up and recover so when he does wake up his body will handle that stress a bit better.

As bad as Thirsty knee was Hentschells sounds horrible :vomit

Rumour is he will miss 2 years. Has dislocated his knee, tore all major ligaments and has broken a bone

Poor bastard :-\

I think Sam had part of a kidney removed, not the entire kidney.

It was only part of Sam's kidney but they also removed his entire brain.

Best wishes to Tom. It's been a shocking year for injuries, but this takes the cake. The top players may earn good money but Tom would have only been on the minimum - hardly compensation for something as serious as this.

Geelong's had some terrible injuries recently, like Jason Snell. I wonder how well the AFL's retirement fund will help these boys.

Induced coma, sedated to reduce stress and the risk of further bleeding. He had quite a massive blood loss according to reports - 3 litres- and had to have packs left in to prevent further bleeding. When you lose large amounts and have transfusions, it mucks up your bloods ability to clot as usual. He would have compensated fairly well for a while, being a young, fit athlete. By the time it became apparent that he was going into shock, he would have already lost a large amount.

Interestingly, in the report I read, it says a Richmond player sho played successfully was found to only have one kidney. Some people are born that way.

i spoke to his uncle tonight and it looks like that they are going to bring him out of the coma a couple of days earlier than planned. i have asked him to pass on pre's best wishes to his nephew and family.

The boy is sedated and intubated in the same way he was when operated on .... i love this term drug induced coma it sounds so much worse.

Best wishes to the boy in regar to making a full recovery from this very serious injury.... make no mistake such injuries can be life threatening.

It doesnt take much to understand that as the kidneys are the bodies filters along with the liver and spleen, they recieve huge blood supply and any laceration to these organs results in potentially life threatening haemorrhages.

Great to see young Tom ok, but for mine if i were him i would be giving the game away. The risk of sustaining such an injury to the sole remaining kidney would be enough to make me retire healthy as opposed to other possibilities which none are worth the risk, or would not be if i were him.

Mentally recovering from such an injury would be like Mt Everest in regard to showing such courage again.

Best wishes Tom and all the best. The more selfless the action, the greater the potential harm to thyself.

You opitomised this and have payed the price and will always be regarded for that courage.
