Apologies for the delay, due to a technical ignoramus problem, but the questions Tommy answered for us are now published on the site. The link is at the top left hand corner of the main page of PRE.

While on the main page there's also a poll about where we think Richmond will finish in 2009. Drop by and post your votes and we'll look back at the end of next season and see how accurate we were.

Thanks heaps to Tommy for taking the time to answer every question we asked. :hearton

I love Tommy even though he was a bit before my time. He could still teach them a thing or two lol. Does anyone know if his ever written a book?

In case anyone involved with a club is interested I should mention that Tommy does Sportsman's Nights. He gives tips for organising successful fund raising events. He gives a talk himself, or can arrange speakers such as Peter Keenan, Kevin Sheedy, Peter Daicos, Kevin Bartlett, Rodney Hogg, John Barnes, Sam Kekovich, David Parkin, Doug Hawkins, Ray Gilson etc, etc.

Tommy organised our function. Thanks to his efforts our small club raised thousands of dollars. He was simply amazing and the passion in his talk would inspire anyone to give their best.

He brought a heap of signed memorabilia to auction and if it didn't reach the reserve (only 3 items for us) Tommy took them back at no cost. I bought a framed Richmond jumper with the team of the century printed on it and signed by Tommy and a framed set of Jack Dyer photos.

If anyone is interested in a similar night for their club please contact me by PM or e-mail [email protected] for contact details

As well as answering our questions Tommy also gave me a list of inspirational quotable quotes. I'll type them on here over the next week or so.

Vince Lombardi, the US's most famous football coach - "If you quit now, during those workouts, you'll quit in the middle of the season, during a game. Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit. We don't want anyone here who'll quit. We want 100% out of every individual, and if you don't want to give it, get out. Just get up and get out, right now."

Willie Shoemaker, champion US jockey- "There are 199 ways to get beat, but only one way to win - get there first."

Thank you Mr Hafey :clap

i loved his point about kids not having all the distractions of today so they played footy every day after school.

my question was quite boring amongst some of the rippers that were given but it was one i could never understand so i had to ask, Hart or Carey?

At the risk of going too much off topic, I remember as a kid seeing Hart get buried right in front of us near the boundary line.

All i can remember was the sound of the feet on the ground thundering towards us then a big "OOOF!!!" as Hart was crunched.

His head bounced off the turf as he fell. The trainers came over and picked him up.

I remember his eyes were rolling into the back of his head and how limp he was as they carried him off.

As they neared the boundary line on the other side of the ground he regained his feet, pushed away the trainers and stumbled back into position, took a mark and goaled! Out of this world, textbook Hart!

Only he could do those things and get away with it.

I always wondered why Carey was so often compared to Hart when to me, he wasnt a pimple on Harts ahem...

He wasnt a star in his first year like Hart.

He didnt win as many premierships as Hart.

He couldnt fly high like Hart.

so many things yet Hart could do everything Carey could, if not, better.

I love Tommy's answer to my question because IMO he not only gives his preference but it says everything about both players :clap

well done Rosita, thoroughly enjoyed the read! :)

A couple more of Tommy's quotes

Ron Clark, Australian runner who broke 17 world records- It is his attitude, rather than the money he makes, that set apart the true professional. I have seen so many so called professional sportsmen who were as amatuerish as a new born babe. On the other hand, many Olympic amatuers are true professionals, not from the money they earn, but because of their approach to their sport. That's where we come back to this word attitude. It sums up the difference between the many talkented and the few champions in any sport. It would exist whatever amount of money was involved, because it's chief ingredient is pride.

Percy Cerutty, Australian athletics coach- You must learn to thrust against the pain of physical exhaustion and be contemptuous of it.

Calvin Coolidge, 30th US president- Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent wll not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
