On Australia Day my wife, who’s has immigrated to Australia from the US, became an Australian citizen. To my very pleasant surprise the Australia Day ambassador at my wife’s ceremony was none other than the legendary Tommy Hafey!

For someone like me growing up in the seventies there is no greater Richmond legend than Tommy. We got to have a quick chat to Tommy before and after the ceremony. He truly is one of life’s great gentlemen. He is so down to earth and was more than happy to pose with the Richmond supporters present for photos and he signed the commemorative book given to my wife.

While there were the obligatory speeches from various politicians, Tommy’s “speech” was straight from the heart and without any notes. He spoke about the importance of looking after yourself (sport and physical fitness), of respecting and helping your parents, of loyalty, of looking after Australia (no graffiti or dropping rubbish), of appreciating what we have in Australia (instead of holidaying overseas) and never giving up – even after setbacks. On this last point he gave numerous examples of AFL footballers and cricketers who were dumped by their club/state and went on to become champions. It was like getting a life rev-up from one of the greatest coaches ever!

Tommy, you’ve still got it! You are a living legend!

;D Great post. We had Tommy at our Football Club, he spoke as you say without notes for over 2 hours and signed autographs for everyone afterwards. He was so knowledgeable, energetic and inspirational it made me feel great to be a Richmond man. :clap

I went to my Grandsons school in Frankston and also had the pleasure of an evening with Tommy, and he also spoke of his life and love for the Richmond Fc. He also went on to talk about the great Royce Hart and Kevin Bartlett era of success that the club had. I also found him to be a person of very high morals and a great love of life. He is a great motivater, and a though gentelman. Big thums up Tommy :cupgold :clap

Was secretary of Narre Warren FC in 1993..Got home from training one night and my better half said someone rang for you tonight ,i said who was it ..she said Tom Hafey.. I said Bull .... But it wasnt,he was ringing around to see who wanted him to come to do a training session..(alas not much money in the kitty back then) so we missed out.

Thanks Burnley Boy.

I truly hope I get to meet Tommy before I depart (he'll probably outlast me :hihi ). Men like him, Alan Jeans (who I had the pleasure of a Grand Final address from before a game) and former Bronco's coach, Wayne Bennett are precious and few.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Tommy twice.

He was just so inspirational and didnt speak a negative word.

When I met him the second time. He remembered me which gave me such a buzz. When I spoke to his beautiful wife, she said that Tommy just enjoys listening to what people have to say and doesnt mind people coming up and having a chat.

One thing Tommy would do, is say who the best player he coached was. He just made the comment there were a few great players he coached and they all add certain qualities. I asked who was the greatest out of Hart, Bartlett and Bourke. He just commented on the strong points of each player and said you cant seperate them.

Tommy still gets up at 5am and swims in the bay. He is still a fitness freak. Looks in great shape.
