Tonight's board meeting

*sigh* Indeed. We appear to have chosen the football equivalent of being Poland

Surely more like modern era France. We think we're one of the BIG 4. We demand respect, yet we are the butt of jokes to the rest of the world. And when in the face of an attack, despite posturing and delusions of greatness, we end up rolling over without even a whimper.

Fair comparison

Nice one, though I'd take living in France over living in Poland, I think Kurtzy's spot on. I went to Warsaw years ago with a Polish girl I was dating at the time, I feel like I never left. :(

Sure, I'd take supporting RFC over Melbourne though. RFC, like France, have a glorious history and while we currenttly suck, there is some grudging admiration for us. France for it's style, cuisine - RFC for it's Club Sing and mascot.

Scorched earth policy nice :o
actually most of western Russia ( up to the Don River ) in 1942 was mostly Nazi..It wasnt until Stalingrad and Kursk in 1943 that the Ruskies started turing things around....Up until then the Jerries had it all their own way. The Russkies never let them off the hook after that...and we all know what happened to Berlin in 1945...

Here endeth the history lesson.
ah kursk the least acknowledged of all the great battles. after kursk the nazis lost their ability to truly go on the offensive.
completely depleted their manpower their armour their airforce their supplies everything. some amazing statistics were borne out at kursk. like more aerial sorties in this one battle than for the entire bttle of britain. more bombs expended than in the entire first world war belive it or not. biggest tank battle ever known horrendous casualties it goes on and on all in the space of about 12 weeks.

The board should have endorsed Wallace for the rest of the season but instead skirted around the issue & did nothing.
disagree it has done what it has said it would do last yr. they said nothing would be done as far as the footy dept goes until mid season this yr. they have continually said they will act only after the revirw is finished. no skirting about the edges no porkies no spin just plain consistency and following thru what they said they would.. mark it down its a first for this club well a first for the first time in god knows how many yrs. no knee jerk reactions no bowing to pressure just a following thru of a process they put in place ages ago.

the only other thing i want the club to do atm is insist to wallace that as many kids as possible have to be played from here on in.

I'm finding myself agreeing with you way too much lately, craw. Very well said.

I'm feeling like changing my user name to John Edward - must have something to do with crossing over! ;)

The Nazi's tanked at Kursk but were unable to top up in the next draft eh Claw ?. In the end, they had to play all the kids and they got murdered too !

Because there is a right way and wrong way to do things.

We have resolutely said and March has personally repeated constantly, we have a Coach under a 5 year contract and we will honour that. A decision on that contract will be made mid-season (Round 11) in 2009.

No mobs were calling for Wallace to be sacked before the season started or even at the end of 08 after it was made clear he would continue coaching in 2009. So what's the difference now? We are 4 rounds into a season and we have not only lost every game but looked shocking in the process.

Wallace must go, HOWEVER all this really means is the decision has just about been made easier for them. It would take a miracle turnaround from here to change anything.

However the integrity of a club and board are at question here. How we support our people, what our word is worth and how professional out processes are. To allow Wallace at the end of 08 to go into 09 as Coach only to sack him 4 games in (which is virtually unheard of) would be the same as Wallace allowing gaspar to stay on the list and then advising him in the first quarter of the season youth would be played before him.

I think people's dissapointment and frustration with Wallace is clouding their judgement and they are now happy to do the things they have bagged Wallace for. Making things up as we go along.

There are many respected figures in football who think it is ludicruous for a) a club to sack a coach 4 games in and b) not support a coach at all midseason let alone now. There are also some who support a mideseason sacking though Ihaven't heard anyone support a Round 4 sacking. It's just not done or professional.

People who have respect for the Board (which appears to be most on here) have to understand we would be a laughing stock (yes more than we are now) and the media would have a field day with us sacking a coach after Round 4 and then you can kiss all your Hardwicks and the like good bye, just like when we appointed Frawley. The amount of people who knocked us back from a interview or withdrew from the process was staggering, because we were a joke. Sacking a coach after 4 games would badly hurt us again in a seach for a coach, make no mistake.

People want to know they will be supported in tough times, that a Board's word means somethign and that there are genuine processes in place. No respectable coach wants to work for a club that buckles to media/public pressure.

The best avenue to find the best coach is to be seen to support the existing one as to our word, which is reasonable. Revising someone's contract at the half way point of their last contracted season. No coach would ever agree to be assessed 4 games into a season and to do so is highly unprofessional.

We must fly under the radar on this one, there is no "quiet" road but this believe it or not is the closest to a low profile. You think Barrett has a field day now, wait until you saw what he would do if we sacked a coach after 4 games we agreed to let coach for 2009. Appoint Sheedy? That would attract a massive circus and distraction and create further angst in supporters.

We need to be devoid of such distractions, concentrate on our internal reviews, research who the best Coach is out there and pursue them with a credible offer from a credible Board and really focus on what we need, where we went wrong before and during that process without fielding media circuses.

well said. totally agree

its the common sense method

With our lack of tackling, one percenters, physical pressure etc. I would have thought Italy was a fair comparison.

My Grandfather always said the Italian tanks they confronted were made different in that they only had the 1 gear going forwards but had 5 gears in reverse.

Have just spent a couple of hours at Punt Road at a Corporate training, with drinks and food afterwards.
Matty White, Rawlings and McCrae were hosting the training, and big Ryan O'Connor being there the whole time, with Don Lord, a Richmond member of the board coming along for drinks, and questions, afterwards.

I ended up with Don Lord's ear for about 20 minutes at the end, being one of the only passionate Richmond supporters, and Ryan came over for about 10 minutes. It was very interesting listening, and asking questions, with my comments thrown in about how Coburg and Richmond played on the weekend. Basically, Don said that all the media speculation the last few weeks was them guessing, and the articles were simply written to sell papers. He said that Terry isn't about to be thrown out, and will most likely coach to the end of the year, unless he resigns, and at this stage, being a professional coach, he won't resign. We will honestly decide on Terry's future in the middle of the year, and, from my prompting, him (Terry) basically being told he won't be the coach if we are 0 and 8, or 1 and 8, you get my drift. If, however, we win the next 4 matches, and things start to look up, there is still a chance of him staying on. If we end up making the finals, he could well coach next year.
Yes, I realise it's a big "if", especially given how we played against Melbourne, and exactly this was put to Don.
But basically, the board meeting voted to keep Terry, and review again in the middle of the year.
I personally agree with Dyer Diciple's post from 2:49 yesterday, which did not seem to contradict anything Don Lord said.
Don also said Patrick Smith is an unliked *smile*, and that's the general consensus from many clubs.
And Caro's article yesterday, basically supporting the board from Richmond, saying they had done a good job, was pretty spot on. Of course he would say that, but my opinion is that, off field, Richmond are doing a hell of a lot better than, say, 4 years ago.
Don said Richie Tambling did a terrific job in front of the Federal minister and others in getting 6.5m to go towards the Richmond Punt Road redevelopment, especially the Indiginous Learning Centre.
And Richmond FC have applied to the council for cricket to be played at the Collingwood footy ground (Vic Park) for matches on the Saturday, with the Richmond cricket club agreeing (I think with a bit of a $ incentive), so training can still go on during the summer months without having to worry about a pitch in the middle of Punt Road. Of course training would still be held at Punt Road, but on the edge of the ground, and not in the middle with a pitch.
I could go on for another 500 words, but that's it for me now. If anyone wants to PM, feel free.

Thanks for the update tonight Shers, but it made my guts twist reading Tamblings Brownlow performance in front of the Federal Minister, I hope he can put in the same performace on Saturday.

Sadly for us it's much easier to get money out of a federal Minister than get a kick as an AFL midfielder. If only Bling had made some vague comment about the global economic crises, global warming and/or a pointless international talkfest he could have doubled the grant.

Bag all you want boys, but lets see you get 6.5m for Richmond.
How about even 1% of that, which would be only a lazy $65k.
Didn't think so.
Actually, name any player who's got 6.5m for their club in grants.
How could you turn this into a negative? ???

in regards to this grand plan for punt road ....has anything been started yet?
they are powering ahead at Princes park....

Maybe we should give him a job in marketing.

Gets a useless player off the list, free's up a spot and gets some talent into the staffing down at that place!

He is a player. Full stop. Thanks Richie for helping (not much love for Steve Wright setting the whole thing up) now get out there, extract a digit and get on with it.

Harsh but it is what it is.

totally agree with Dyer D - lets remain professional at least off the field

I still like Tambling as a player, maybe not playing like a top 4 pick, but still plays better than a lot of others running around out there.

I'm actually a member of the Bling fan club shers, the constant ridicule on PRE has driven us underground but we still meet in a secret location every month during the full moon. There we pray for the day to come that told that was prophesied by our high prist, 'Disco08' when Bling will slay the evil devil "Buddy" and deliver Richmond to the promised land.
