Top three basic skill areas where most improvement is needed in 2008

1 - effective disposal - because it's more than just kicking and handballing it's hitting the right targets)
2 - defensive pressure - this will increase when the kids gain some strength. at the moment opponents just burst straight through a lot of our tackles.
3 - Leadership - When the pressure gets turned on, someone needs to step up and show leadership. Too often for too many years, when the going gets hot, the leaders go missing. This needs to stop so our culture starts to change.

A fourth I would put down as effort/gut running. A lot of our guys just don't work hard enough to present easy options to kick too, meaning we get pressured and turn it over too easily.

leadership is an interesting one. I think most of us agree that it's an area we are weak in and that Johnno isn't really and inspiring captain. Problem is that leaders are essential and we dont seem to have any and havent had any for years.

do we take a risk on a youngster, keep it with Sugar or handball it off to another experienced player?

A real conuundrum.

Agree 6ers.
1a. Leadership
b. Effort
c. Pride in representing the club, and a willingness & work ethic to be the best they possibly can, ALL the time
2. Skills, all of the basics..kicking,marking, handballing, shepherding, blocking, tackling, running and any other 1%ers
3. Decision making

1. Presure
2. Presure
3. Presure

Geelong did it to us when we went down by 157 points. Because of the relentless pressure, every skill set in every area of the game suffered. There is no reason why we can't do that.

Swans are also good at it....but they're horribly boring to watch. :hihi

Their Ressies did the same thing to us in the GF as well opulent one, murdered us with relentless gang pressure.
Don't forget to tell your nephew that we have a player named after him at Tigerland ( Thirsty Willy ) and that the hawks look and smell just like his full nappy.
Keep applying the subtle motivation to swing him over , hum the Tiger theme song a lot when he's nearby.

1. Structure / Consistent Team Plan / Discipline

I don't want to see who the token player is at CHB this year (ie natural forwards spending time back there in pre-season). I want to see natural forwards in forward line, natural backs in the back line. I want to see consistent pigeon holes on the ground for players. Only way back half's become the league's best is by playing constantly together and learning to gel/bond. Let's think long and hard in pre-season, then STICK to a team structure mostly.

There needs to be a method of play, structure to moving the ball. It seems like we do a lot of "winging" it out on the field. I want to see the coach developing and sticking to a structure & style of play. I want to see players being dropped/ dragged/disciplined if they deviate from that.

2. 1%ers / Killer Instinct / Pack Mentality

Nothing wings games more and equalises a game if playing a superior side more than PRESSURE. No it doesn't have to be boring, dull flooding. Simple pressure. Tackling, bumping, shepperding, contesting high and low and second third efforts when you don't get the ball at first.

For years, no matter what coach we have had, we have been WOEFUL at tackling as a team and shepperding etc. Most of our greatest upsets we have won in the last 5 years have solely come from the occassional time we have come out with ferocious pressure on the ball.

We need to be in a mentality of having just been done over the week before by 10 goals...EVERY WEEK (as we seem to come out hard only after getting thumped). Come out angry, intent only for the ball, with no thought to ego or personal welfare.

Hunt in packs!!!!!! Other team has more experience? Higher paid superstars? Media / Business Mogul Presidents? "That team" got Judd by tanking? Fuel your aggression into your tackling and shepperding. We need a us against them mentality. Develop a withdrawal from leather poisoning. Do whatever it takes to get the ball back, even if your on your hands and knees and just got crunched. They have a bigger ruck or CHF? Learn from nature, take him down in a pack / gang tackle. Make the opposition know your men, not boys awed to be running around on the grandest stage of all showing your latest hair product.

TALK TO EACH OTHER! Hell develop codes for doing such, but we need more communication at there. Stay out of forwards corridors and talk to each other about how hot they are, determining quickly who will contest for the mark etc . If i see one more collision between Richmond players going for a mark i'll spew up!!

3. Return to a Tigers of Old mentality / culture at the club...

We are not Port Adelaide and Fremantle in their early days. We don't play basketball or netball. We are not the sydney swans nor do we have the skill to play like wallace wants us to play (I'm not sure any team does).

Return to the tapes of yesterday. You have to stay cutting edge for game plays and tactics and sport science. But for culture / psychology...go back to the Tigers of Old. Cultivate a us against them mentality. Show the players the era when we were the most feared side in the league. Show them the pride they could walk with if they could emulate the feats of Jack, Royce, Bartlett, Rioli, Sheedy, Roach etc. Ask them how they want to be remembered, how they want to look back on their reputations and careers.

Have the players run out with pride. Have a coaching structure that supports the culture in not only inserting skillful kids in the side, but kids who will grow to intimidate and stamp their physical presence on the game. Have a coaching structure that will put players on the field who will protect the kids and fly the banner when we play the monsters and intimidators. Gradually cultivating a side that will have a blend of physical presence AND skill / flair like all the great grand final sides have or fail abysmally on that final day in September.

We are a working class club with a history of some of the toughest men in the game...CONTINUE THE LEGACY! Don't turn it into the Dragonball Z football club full of kids who look better suited in front of their game boxes.

Obviously it's a gradual longterm transition, but if we could pull these three off I am sure we could shoot into the bottom eight with a bullet quickly.

You wanna see what a good Richmond outfit is like, watch the secong half of the 95 Prelim final against Essendon.

They hunted in packs- we need to improve

Contested the ball and opposition players hard- we need to improve

and

backed each other to get the ball and kick it long- we need to improve.

I personally believe these are the keys areas in 2008 witht he list we have got. Beyond that when some of the young skilful kids get a bit of size and experience, then skill etc will be more important. We need to make up for our shortfall in skill and experience, with hunger, passion and willingness to work for one another.

Great post DD.
Enough of just pulling on the jumper without thought.

8ball suggested a while ago it should start with every playing recieving a copy of Rhett Bartlett's new book.
The coaching staff should make it manditory reading as well as the blueprint for success seems to be missing a vital ingredient.

Time to get some passion back into the RFC. :emblem

Actually ToO there was a bit of thought into that passage of my post (for a change).

8ball's suggestion is a great one, but a little too cerebal for your average athletes :P

(And I can say that fairly as I used to be a pro athlete)

They would just read the chapter on Dyer maybe, bit and pieces and look at the pictures...

Anyone in management/training will tell you people don't read.

Training/promo tapes aren't much better BUT when you have athletes, and showing them THERE sport...throw in some modern music soundovers for the young ones...in depth interviews and passages of play, highlights (that dreaded word on PRE..oh not the draft so we're right...) etc

Should do the job.

If not...maybe King has a sledgehammer in the boot of his car to get the message through...

More Tigers of Old! *SMACK* Run that last lap maggot...hmmm ok getting a bit too carried away...but you get the picture.

Has to be more impactful than "read this book on your own time".

Lol so true.
Oh well it's good in theory. :P
Don't these boys go to some footy TAFE or something? I'd think it should be required homework.
