Total youth policy or a mix of old and new?

all the mid-sized players who were playing consistently well for Coburg were already in the seniors by the end of the season... i would LOVE to see Action Jackson play week in week out, but he obviously wasn't the right option. Hilton's time on field was not a waste of time, he was extremely effective when he was on field. We were a chance for the finals until about round 20 so we had to field our best 22 and honestly Hilton deserved a spot (from the players we had available).

As for whether it was right to give him the flick? Well it was harsh but yes it was the right thing to do. He wasn't gonna help our club grow (he's just a utility with experience) and for the reasons you are mentioning now (holding a position in the senior list which belongs to a youngster) we had to let him go.

I do, however, understand where you are coming from regarding the last 2 games (when we were more or less out of the finals race) that he should have been dropped.

agree with you Otis, Jackson just seemed totally lost last year. Why throw a guy in for the sake of just throwing him in. He needs to learn his craft.

Otis & Zips I agree that he may have been the best option on what we had or had seen from the list avaliable, but it was only short sighted thinking. Jacko hasn't had a go up forward from memory, I don't think he will be a forward either, though these are the years where we can experiment with players, blood players etc.
Lets find out what we have to work with.
Otis, I think you may be being a little generous when you say that Hilton was extremely effective when he was on the field. He was a pass set at a low pass mark. He performed as I expected he would, a bit here & there. I would prefer to see a youngster(s) development pushed along with a mix of senior & Coburg games, rather than a spot taken up by someone who is going nowhere.

every year we will have our surprise delistings, sometimes we have players who are surprise weekly selections (like tivendale or hilton). our coaches are always going to face these selection dilemmas Disco, and obviously at the time TW felt it would've been a mistake to select Jackson before Hilton. Maybe he had a gun held to his head? But if a player offers little consistency to our reserves side yet you name him in the seniors, it would be rather demoralising for all the other youngsters like Roach, Raines, Meyer who were also struggling to get a game.

Back to the topic.

Hawthorn played youngsters before their due date because they had to - just have a look at their list.  Their policy of youth was forced upon them.

We are in a slightly different position where we have very good senior age players that have earned their regular place - from there its a bun fight who will get selected week in week out.  As it should be at our stage of development.  If a Kellaway doesn't perform in comes Moore.  If Hyde drops his form in comes Foley or Rodan or maybe White or Polo.

Hopefully this course of playing in form players will produce a settled and outstanding side within the next 18 months.

Hawthorn will probably take a bit longer due to their lack of class at the top end of their list.

All part of the topic titn. ;) Although many on here probably wouldn't agree, Hilton had  more football nous than Jackson does.  Remember, this kid is starting from a long way back when it comes to understanding the game (where to position himself in a contest, getting on the right side of his opponent, where to lead to get the footy).  It will take time with him.  He has the physical attributes, he is just learning the smarts now.

we must be forgetting someone like thursfield. He obviously showed enough to be promoted at the first opportunity. If players arent doing enough at Coburg, they shouldn't get a gig in the 1's. I for one have confidence in TW and co to do the right thing by our club. Go Tiges.
