It staggers me that it is taboo to trade first round draft picks for two reasons
1. So many high draft picks are all hype and no substance. kids play well in underage football, then fall in a classic heap in the bigtime.
2. its usually only one or two that stand out.

i would argue that the best time to pick up players is as early as possible AFTER they have proven that they can make it in the big time. You dont need high draft picks. Adelaide have proven this. Doubts still remain over Tambling, Hodge, etc. Very few of them make a real impact in any of their first three years. Good talent scouts should be looking at 20-22 year olds who are showing potential against quality opposition

I take your point jonesy but name some players you have in mind?

Sure we can try and poach players once they have proven themselves but by that stage they'll probably be commanding a fairly decent price both in draft picks and also their salaries. While not all young players turn out to be stars not all player who are doing well at one club continue the same form at their new club. I like the idea that all our young guys are being drafted together and are building an era together. Sure a few will leave and a few others will arrive but when we have the chance to take the best youngsters we should. It always depends on who is on offer but I would be reluctant to give away our high draft picks.

Bling needs more time and I'm not sure what doubts remain about Hodge? He averaged 27 touches per game last year and 23 this year in a pityful Dawks team.

I would be pointing my finger at X Clarke if you want to find a bust in that 2001 draft. He was taken 5th overall and he makes Kosi look like an Ironman. It's amazing to look back and see that the Saints took Dal Santo 8 picks after him. :o

Edit - And Richard Cole was taken at #11.....two picks before Dal Santo. :rofl :rofl

2004 draft: 1, 4, 12, 16, 20 :o

oh god how i'd love that set of draft picks again this year [drool]

it would cost us a favourite son or three but we'd get some some seriously decent kids in the yellow and black.

DIW. Do it Wallace.

Very sensible TG. Agree.

Great name Achilles Jones. I think it was from "The Big Men Fly", starring John Hargraves & what was her name ........., Jill Craig, I think. Sorry, Diane Craig.

I think enough Tiger supporters have gone through the experience of trading first round draft picks, in the late 90s & early 2Ks, to know that it is a quick way to ruining a club. The proof is North Melbourne who've gone from regular finalists to cellar-dwellers within a couple of seasons by going for other clubs cast offs.

The last couple of years has seen the introduction of many new young players into the Tiger line up. We've gone from cellar-dwellers to just outside the door to the finals in 2 years. If we can seek out more junior champions the long term future of the club will be assured.

If ever you get the inclination to think of where trading draft picks can get you, just think:
Biddiscombe, Hudson, Cameron, Johnson, Brown et al. Some of these players may have given us a good year or two, but as a club we need ten plus year players.

Phantom I don't think AJ was going to give the picks away cheaply and I beleive we have done reasonably well out of trading our first round picks[ Brown, Johnson) and pretty eratically out of our early draft picks (Ottens,Fiora,Pettifer to a lesser extent).
If a proven gun with 50 or 60 games under his belt wants to come back to Melbourne or a club is desperate enough to want to trade for that pick then why the bloody hell not.
Tambling and Meyer still have plenty to prove, and if some club was willing to trade there first draft pick for either of these players .i would certainly trade.and l am sure so would many others. But we would never have traded picks 4 or 12 in 2004.Even if a Brown(aged 25) or Johnson (aged 22) type was offered.
We would surely trade for that kind of quality now

The Big Men Fly was a play by Alan Hopgood, I'd love for there to be an Achilles Jones in this years draft. Very few clubs can trade their picks away to build a winning team these days.

I think you can trade picks/players when the foundation is built, an you have a surplus of class. Maybe you just have to have A.Jones for that tilt at the flag. Just swap young X for him and draft pick 12. But for a club like ours which has a half built foundation, much of which is located on landfill and sand it would be suicide.

None of the silverware (picks or players) at RFC should be up for sale. If you look at it sensibly there are no short cuts or easy ways. The best players are dear and getting one may set the club back years. One player will not win you a flag. I ask you were the Brown and Johnson deals good for the club? Line ball. They have been good in terms of leadershp, but cost us a lot. I believe they will be ready to retire by the time the club is any good (2009 and beyond). Few 'bargains' ever make it. Even with B2, the jury is still out.

I think it would be just about a sin if the Richmond Football Club traded their first round draft pick for a Aker/Everitt.
It's not the direction the club is heading.
I thought we were over the spud syndrome!

Success doesn't happen overnight...........But it will happen..........Eventually.

The only thing we would trade our first round draft pick is for another first round draft pick

1st round? I'd be peeved severely if we traded our 3rd round pick let alone first. We must keep at least our first 3 picks, especially in this draft. Our 3rd round pick will be around pick 42. This pick can easily be a gun player in this and any draft.

GO TIGES!!!
