PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Just thinking about the way the trade period is set up. To me at the moment it is ineffectual and doesn’t allow players or teams to make improvements quickly.

For me, the other problem is the timing. Why have a club trading draft picks so far away from the actual draft?

Doesn’t it make sense to have the trade period right before the draft? Or at least much closer. Clubs have done there home work on players a long way out from trade time and the draft.

I think it would be a much more exciting event if the trade period had the following changes;

1)Trade period held over two or three day period a Monday- Wednesday.

2) Allow future draft picks to be traded. Up to two years in advance. Would open things up and allow more flexibility.

3) A two or three day break and then have the draft on a Friday night or a Saturday morning. Would allow for a short but exciting build up.

4) At the end of each round of picks have a 15 minute trade period for the first three rounds of the draft and then 5 minutes for the remaining rounds.
Let me throw up a example. Say last year Richmond draft Ty Vickery at 8. But we were tossing up Steele Sidebottom and Jack Ziebell as well. We think they are all worthy of pick 8 but decide to go with the ruckman. At the end of the first round, Sidebottom is still on the board. We come up with a trade to give Melbourne Will Thursfield and next years fourth round pick for Melbourne’s first pick in round 2. The entire time the draft is going on clubs would be contacting each other coming up with deals in the back room. Would be a much more exciting event.

5) Once all picks are made there is a two hour final trade period. Draft day would go from 9-5. It would be a massive day.

The reason I raise these ideas is because the draft is going to be completely comprised over the next five years. The existing clubs need to be given a system that allows them to improve just as quickly as the new teams. The current system will not allow that and will cause clubs to gp into funks that will take much longer to recover from and will allow the same teams to finish on top. This is something the AFL wants to avoid at all costs, the AFL loves to trot out it’s standard line of “every team has made a preliminary final this decade”. The current system will not allow that with all the draft concessions that are in place.

Something has to change to give the existing clubs a fighting chance.
