So what are the risks of trading a No. 8 pick in the National Draft?

What does recent history tell us?  Looking at the period 1990-2000 - who was drafted at No. 8 and what have they done?

Year        Player                        Club                      Games played to end of 2004
1990       Paul Gow                   Footscray              7
1991       Michael Symons         Essendon              109
1992       Paul Symmons           W Coast                99
1993       Michael Frost             St Kilda                  24
1994       Daniel Harford           Hawthorn              162
1995       Jared Crouch             Sydney                  156
1996       Leigh Brockman         Geelong                 12
1997       Chris Tarrant             Collingwood           124
1998       Jude Bolton               Sydney                   115
1999       Joel Corey                 Geelong                  83
2000       Daniel Motlop            Kangaroos              44

A mixed bunch but with the balance definately favouring quality.  Quite a few of these are in the middle of their careers and could end up being absolute champions for their clubs.

And of course there are the more recent No. 8 selections: Bartel, Brennan, Clarke and Meesen but it is too early in their careers to make definative assessments.

Comparing Fev to those listed I would place him above Gow, Symons, Symmons, Frost, Harford, Brockman - so what - on par with Tarrant and Motlop (from what we've seen) and behind the rest.

My reckoning is that it would be a considerable risk to trade a No. 8 pick on Fev - who was picked up in 1998 at No. 38.

Would I pull the trigger? 8)
