Train on players

“WAFL forward Mitch Schofield has been seen as a frontrunner at Richmond for its sole list spot, with VFL Tiger Mykelti Lefau also competing for a shot with the AFL team.”
I saw that but don’t agree. I could see Lefau playing immediately and impact as a disruptive, pressure player Something akin to the Towner impact.

I doubt they’d invite both to compete for 1 spot and then take neither of them.
The lure for them to try out is that there is a spot on the list for one of them.

It would send a poor message to any future potential players to try out with us.
Disagree.
It’s an opportunity that most wanna be’s would not hesitate to accept however there can be no guarantees.
It’s an opportunity to observe first hand how each player adapts to a professional environment however the club would not sign on an undeserving, lesser of the two evils player on a fixed contract just for appearance sake.
And I’m sure both players were made fully aware of this before signing on as a SSP candidate. What they can do I believe is put a minimum contract on their heads, as Bauer did for 18 months, to ensure they’re given the proper time to develop should they get drafted.

And if the wannabes have multiple clubs to choose from to trial for an SSP spot then the club that has a history of trialling players and not offering either player a spot would be over looked by potential players in favour of clubs that offered a guaranteed chance at a spot.

At the end of the day they can accept a list spot from elsewhere anyway cant they? Didnt that happen with Carlton, Collingwood and Markov? Markov trained with Carlton, while they decided whether theyd offer him a spot, collingwood swooped.

That’s the risk a club would be well aware of.
And not sure any club would build up a “history” of wasting players time by trialing them and then not selecting them.
But I’m not sure the balance of power lies with a SSP as you are suggesting.

Actually trained with Collingwood first, who then decided not to select him. Then asked to train with Carlton and after one training session, Collingwood had a list spot open up due to injury and offered him a contract.
Then goes on to play in a Premiership.
Great story

A good question, Bradtke turned out to be a wasted pick last year.
Unless Lefau, or Schofield's performances demand a spot for one of them, I'd be ok with waiting until the midseason draft.
Little bit of difference between Bradtke and the Schofield / Lefau options. Bradtke was pretty much a Hail Mary shot basically straight out of bush footy. At least Schofield and Lefau have both been playing second tier footy at VFL and WAFL level.

Believe it or not, the genius at essendrugs did it to us a few years ago (I think?) if he didn’t, he thought strongly about it… actually it was st kilda with marsh.

Have we seen enough from either of the train on blokes to fill the remaining spot?

Or should we keep our powder dry for the mid season draft, where we may have the chance to fill a need?
I must say normally there’s lots of vibes about train on players , this year nothing at all , our spotters I doubt even recognize them going on reports , I’d be staggered if we listed one

My crude take on very limited exposure is that scho is similar profile a player to Bauer , tho Bauer highlights are much more impressive . Lefau I’m very much on the fence as I’ve watched closely at VFL and never have I thought he screamed afl player ,,,to his credit he has a few traits that’d be handy ,,,tackling , bulk and quick , that all helps

What happened to the pack Buster Mykelti?
Not over excited on either.

I guess we could keep Mykelti under our noses in the VFL and if a spot comes up mid season we could grab him then potentially
What's the difference between march and June
If they haven't liked him now, I don't think 3 months will make any difference.

I
