Went to Victoria park to watch the boys train this morning.
Those not training with the main group included:
Pettifer - trained on the sidelines
Pattison - strapped right ankle also did light handball and reflex skills
Cotchin - handball and reflex skills, and some cheeky boundary line shots at goal (does not have a limp as some have suggested)
Newman - did 75% of the main session before iceing his left foot for about 15 mins
Coughlan - not present
King - trained well but left 3/4's through the session for lunch with some girlfriends? ???
Richo also did most of the session but then retired to his own stretching routine.
In the hot sun the boys did a series of circle work type drills, and worked on some set plays.
Standouts:
Riewoldt - continues to get better and better, a real leader who can truly kick with both feet
Cuz - his work ethic is fantastic and it seems to be rubbing off on the younger players
Simmonds - looks like he has finally got a full pre-season under his belt. Looks great and trained exceptionally well
Brown - also looks like his injury demons are behind him, look out competition
Foley - a true professional, very hard on himself when he missed a target/goal
Deledio - getting even better
Morton - trained well, his defensive skills need a big lift (but we already know that)
Thursfiled - back from a virus/cold, was impressive
McGuane - coming along brilliantly
Moore - part of I hope will be a ten year rock solid backline with Thursty/McGuane
White - just needs to improve his kicking slightly but should be given every opportunity to play
Rance - trained very well, is filling out and looks the goods
Vickery - Ready made AFL footballer, great pick up who does not take a backward step
Alroy Gilligan - if he has the temperament will be an absolute star. Was snapping goals from everywhere (in his own time).
His freaky skills are Rioli/Davey rolled into one.
There is no doubt the boys are getting bigger and stronger, and for once we actually have some depth that can truly fill spots.
Strange being in this situation, we actually look good.
If Terry and the other coaches encourage them to take the opposition on, play on when possible and not pussyfoot around in the backline we will run opposition teams off their feet.
A favourable run with injuries and their should be absolutely, positively NO EXCUSE for not making the finals.
